i think the linebackers the bears picked are all either pretty decent in coverage and/or good rushing the passer.

I came across this stat regarding Greene:

Opposing quarterbacks completed just 15 of 99 passes thrown in Greene’s area in 2012 for 88 yards.

You have to factor in competition there. But as a former FS who has shown ability to intercept and defend passes, he's the perfect LB to have in the pass-happy NFL. Reading more on him really tempered the concerns I had doubling down on LB. Not that it means much, but pre-draft I thought he was the Bears possible 2nd round pick, to boot.

Yep, both LBs are good in coverage and have a history of training for that. In Greene he's a former safety and in Bostic, his father was a CB for the Lions and in his interview on the The Score mentioned how he learned some tricks from his dad. Both these guys seemingly can play the pass/run very well.

I did cringe when hearing Arthur Brown was most comparable to Navarro Bowmen.

he's also the least likely to play in 2013. Briggs is signed through 2014. The pressure will be on him to perform. There is nobody left here with much ties/incentive to keep Briggs, so Greene is-line to start by year 3 at the latest, maybe 2.

Given their skill sets, it seems to me that Greene would be better playing MLB with Bostic taking over for Briggs, at least in the Tampa 2.

Related to the old Saints RB with the same name?

Wikipedia says that Dalton Hilliard had a kid who went to HS in Louisiana.

This one is different:

HIGH SCHOOL - Lettered three seasons as a kick returner, running back, defensive back, wide receiver and fullback at Punahou HS in Honolulu for coach Kale Ale ... ... SuperPrep All-Far West No. 69 prospect ...

PERSONAL - Full Name: Dalton Ishmael Hilliard ... Born: August 1, 1990 in Chicago, IL ... Parents: Larry and Amalia Hilliard ... Has a brother, Kamden, and a sister, Paige ... Scored three touchdowns, totaled 280 all-purpose yards, including a 70-yard interception return, in a state semi-final playoff game performance he dedicated to his mom, which he lists as his biggest athletic thrill to date ... Lists running back Ernie Davis as the famous athlete he admires the most ... Hobbies include drawing, football and music ... Relative Keith Jackson has played in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers ... His mom played in the women's professional football league ... Dad is a former high school football All-American ... Sociology major.

Tough 6-4 Loss last night for the Cubs! RT @weelios @lancebriggs what are you thought on jason collins coming out?

— Lance Briggs (@LanceBriggs) April 29, 2013

"How about those Bulls!!!" Briggs tweeted in response to a tweet that asked, 'With Jason coming out, do you think the NFL players will?"

Both tweets were later removed from Briggs' timeline.

The homer in me wants to applaud his decision to actually sidestep the topic and not say something stupid about abominations, going to hell, being a sinner, the act being icky, etc.

I'll just try and maintain that notion.

Yeah, but there's also the thought that if he wanted to sidestep the issue, the better decision would've been to not reply at all. It was twitter, not a reporters mic shoved in his face.

Yup. He's been around long enough to know when its time to shut the hell up.

"(The coaching staff is) going to make sure everyone knows their assignments and we are protected," Cutler said Monday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN Chicago 1000. "Bushrod is a huge addition and we drafted some guys and some of the guys we had last year have to step in and play well. It's definitely a point of emphasis. We're not going to let the quarterback get hit. We're not going to go into games unsure about protections. Everything starts there, and I think (new offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Aaron) Kromer is doing a great job with getting those guys up to speed with exactly how they want these things done."

"I watched the first round and linemen were going off the board left and right so I wasn't too sure where we were going to go," Cutler said. "We have some holes defensively, we have Bushrod through free agency so I wasn't for sure about the pick. Like any quarterback I'm pretty selfish so anytime they pick somebody on offense it's going to make me smile."

Wow, that's a lot quicker than normal isn't it?

They're usually pretty quick. But I'd say they are slightly ahead of schedule. Signings usually come next week IIRC.

He's drinking Lone Star?

yea. he aint "just like us". I'm deeply worried about him actually

Of course he's not like us. He's mocking people, it's like when Russell Westbrook dresses like Louis Skolnik, he's doing it for the irony.

#Bears have hired Ryan Kessenich as a scout. Kessenich spent the last four years as an area scout with the Chiefs.

#Bears have promoted Kevin Turks to director of pro personnel and Dwayne Joseph to associate director of pro personnel.

The Bears lost a guy to the Chiefs front office and took back another guy. Two seasons in a row with a fair amount of scouting department turnover.

Why all the change in the Bears' front office? Here is what is going on:

We have to look at each situation individually to understand what happened. Chris Ballard was offered a promotion with the Chiefs as director of player personnel. It was a better job, and presumably, a higher paying job, than the one he had working for the Bears as director of pro personnel. You can’t blame him for wanting it. Ted Monago also was offered a promotion with the Rams as national scout. He was an “executive scout” with the Bears, which basically meant he was a regional scout with a fancy title. Again, you can’t blame Monago for wanting to be a national scout with more responsibilities. The third front office man to leave, James Kirkland, apparently was not wanted back. A couple of key points here. The first point is the Bears’ scouting staff is very highly regarded around the NFL. It has been for a long time. So when other teams need front office men, they are looking at the Bears’ staff. Credit for this staff should go to Mark Hatley and Jerry Angelo, who hired most of these men. And to Phil Emery, who retained and promoted them. The other point is Emery could have blocked Ballard and Monago from leaving, because they still were under contract. But he obviously did not want to stand in the way of these men receiving promotions that were better situations for their careers and for their families.

I take issue with the notion that the Bears scouting staff has been very highly regarded around the NFL for years. This may be like the whole MLB hitting/pitching coach commentary where everybody is a respected expert in his field and therefore they are all good. The staffs that Hatley and Angelo put together originally probably were really good, because in my opinion the Bears in the mid-2000s were the most talented team in the NFC. Even their much maligned QB was very talented. But the talent has been drying up the last several years and that has to reflect on the staff, at least to some extent. They did a piss poor job of bringing in talent probably starting with the 2007 draft at least through the end of the Angelo era.

It makes me wonder how much of this is based on reputation and perception instead of actual results. How much time/ energy do teams spend monitoring what other teams around the league are doing?

@Gil_Brandt: Love Kyle Long pick by @ChicagoBears. Was told by several people @nflcolts (24) and @packers (26) would have taken him had Bears not.

That's what I mean with the comparison to pitching/hitting coaches in MLB. Every time one is hired we hire about how he is one of the best.
