Bears aren't tanking the season, so there's no reason to go out of their way to appease the meatballs. Though it might happen if they get off to a wretched start or if Cutler goes down with an injury.

If the veterans are hurt or ineffective and the rookies aren't up to snuff, I could easily see a situation where he's the best solution in mid-season, regardless of meatball sentiment.

So at what point this season will the injury situation lead Urlacher to taking on the Kerry Wood role and coming back for one last hurrah after he thought he was done?

DP presented that scenario to him at the end of that interview I linked above. Uralcher said no amount of money, no scenario would have him return. Really did sound like he was really done.

I listened to maybe half, and it sure seemed to me that the tone did not match up with the words as far as the "I'm done" sentiment is concerned.

I thought he was pretty convincing in that last bit. He said he's tired of working out, and admitted he just doesn't want to put his body through it anymore. In any case, I think he's handling things at this point as well as possible given everything that's already happened.

Yeah, I think he feels that way now. He knows his body can't handle OTAs, training camp and a 16 game season. But he's not going to completely stop working out.

@AZCardinals: You were who we thought you were. Congrats. RT @BUrlacher54: It was an honor to play my entire career for the @ChicagoBears.

Fantastic.

When asked who the toughest player he played against was Urlacher immediately responded with this.

"I played against him, and played with him, (Jay) Cutler is tough, man," Urlacher said on "Mike & Mike In The Morning" on ESPN Radio. "I know a lot of people don't like him, and this and that, but I played against him when he was in Denver and I played with him in Chicago, and I'd just rather play with him in Chicago. He's a tough dude."

He had no reason to say that, so maybe that will help with the meatballs... probably not.

Bears are retiring Ditka's #89.

"Mike Ditka embodies the spirit of everything the Bears are about," chairman George H. McCaskey said. "He's an icon. The last time we won the championship Mike Ditka was our coach and the last time we won before that Mike Ditka was a player. The organization knew it was the right thing to do.

"He revolutionized the tight end position as a player and grabbed an entire franchise by the throat as a head coach and willed it to victory in the Super Bowl.We have more retired numbers than any other team in the NFL. After this, we do not intend to retire any more numbers but we thought if there is going to be a last one, there is no more appropriate one than 89."

Singletary's unofficial retirement was lifted this year. I guess no chance he gets his retired.

Weird. Why would you unofficially announce you aren't retiring anymore numbers? There'd better not be a 54 on the Bears next year.

They didn't announce anything really, but James Anderson took 50, which hasn't been worn since Singletary. So it had not been handed out for like 20 years. I suppose it is still possible Anderson will switch for the regular season once rosters are cut and other numbers become available.

I wonder if anyone took 54 yet, and if not how long it'll take.

retiring numbers is stupid.

I don't mind it but the Bears have been a little too loose with retiring numbers. Including two guys who earned it primarily by dying and another who played a whopping 5 seasons with the team. You can probably cut the Bears list in half and it'd actually be a good list. For great, but not once in a generation players, you can have an unofficial moratorium on the number for several years.

Halas, Payton, and Butkus would all be locks for me.

Sayers, Grange, Nagurski, George, Luckman you could make strong cases for.

McAffe, Turner, Ditka, and Singletary could be "moratorium" guys to me. Add Urlacher to the list.

Hewitt, Piccolo, and Galimore are off completely for me. Have an award ala the Brian Piccolo Award if you wanna honor a player who dies.

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday that new Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman "taught me everything" when they were on the Oakland Raiders coaching staff, and he still uses many of Trestman's techniques.

"Everything wouldn't be an overstatement," Harbaugh said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN Chicago 1000. "We use his system still of calling plays and the way he taught us those concepts and techniques. I've used (those) since I coached with the Raiders, the University of San Diego, Stanford and the 49ers.

"He will do great and talk about long overdue. Marc Trestman becoming a head coach is well deserved, he will do a phenomenal job."

"Absolutely. Grand slam. That was a grand slam hire. You see the coaches that Marc has put around him, they know football. He knows football. He's a great teacher and I think that's coaching right there. ...

"That's something I learned working with Marc, by example and by things that he would tell me. That's one of my lucky breaks in coaching was to work with Marc Trestman because he took the time to train me and to teach me. And I will always be thankful for that."

Yea I haven't really been able to understand the preemptive negativity about the Trestman hire.

I think it was the initial shock that the Bears hired someone that was on no one else's radar, hasnt been employed in the NFL in a few years, and whose last job was not in the NFL, not in college, but in the Canadian Football League. Plus he looks like a giant nerd. Once people learned more about him the negativity has lessened quite a bit.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but how can you possibly say you don't understand where it's coming from? It's obvious why.
