Ryu-Hyun and Melky are the two FA signings I absolutely want above any others. They both have the potential to become part of the foundation with Rizzo/Castro and it can be accomplished relatively cheaply.

Cubs, Dodgers, Rangers, Phillies, and Indians have all shown serious interest in Ryu, requesting documentation and things. Brett has an article up at BN, can't link from my cell. Damn, the Dodgers need to go away.

Yay for self-promotion in a way that is actually, technically, just helping out Dave!

Haha, thanks, Tim. I would say I am a fan of many things that Kap does well.

I had thought that Melky was already past 30, didn't realize he only turned 28 after he was suspended this year.

I just chalk it up to building industry bridges, but your Kaplan praise is easily the most off-putting aspect of your site, which I otherwise enjoy.

Kaplan is a neanderthal who happens to be well connected.

Yes...he did it himself...

That would be a really nice start to the offseason. Based on how aggressive Theo was with Soler/Puig I'm pretty optimistic about this.

Honestly, I'm not. The Dodgers may need a LOOGY.

They need a new BP pitcher

Neither am I. The Cubs seem way to conservative right now and there too many teams willing to drop stupid money.

The one thing they have seemed willing to do is spend money on guys they can control for several years. They've overspent just because they can and are more willing to do that than trade their quantity guys.

Agreed. I fully expect a very competitive offer and unless someone completely blows everyone else out of the water (which is possible), I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Cubs signed him. That would be a nice start to this weekend. Hopefully we find out today one way or another.

Even then they're still spending sensibly. That's not going to cut it when you have teams like the Dodgers or the Rangers tossing around dollars like drunken sailors.

Nobody spent like drunken sailors at all on Soler. Are we sure people are high enough on this guy to spend ridiculously? Is his ceiling high enough to dictate that (not that that in and of itself would be enough to stop someone from grossly overpaying)? I don't know, just hasn't seemed like he was THAT hyped up. I haven't payed terribly close attention, however.

I hope not, though even when you don't have teams spending stupid money you still have the Cubs getting bit by playing it safe when they missed out on Cespedes. It's disheartening to think they're willfully not flexing their financial muscles.

If anybody spent like a drunken sailor on foreigners the past years its' the Cubs with that one guy they signed just to give them a leg up on signing other guys. Most people went for what was reported and/or a reasonable level.

2nd best bid on Cespedes, 2nd best bid on Darvish, best bid on Soler, (rumored) best bid on Puig, and of course Concepcion

yeah, we're just being way too conservative with our monetary offers to international talent

Yeah, they are, considering they couldn't seal the deal on three of the five guys you listed I really don't care how much many "Good Try!" ribbons they rack up. This is a team that should have stupid money at their beck and call.

Dollars weren't the issue with Cespedes and they obviously weren't the issue with Soler. For guys who are pre-prime or entering prime they've been plenty willing to use resources on bringing them into the fold. There's no reason to be an auto-pessimist about a similar situation.

Years were apparently the issue with Cespdes, which is still them playing too conservative for their own good. I'm going to be largely pessimistic about these sorts of situations until more of them start going the Cubs' way, much as I'm largely pessimistic about the foreseeable future until it actually starts to work. I'm not saying I want to be right; I want to be horribly, horribly wrong on all of this stuff.
