I'm tired of the Cardinals. My favorite sport is the most unkind one to me.

I hate them so much that I literally can't watch any playoff game they're involved in. I don't want to see the next stupid [expletive] that will win them a game they didn't deserve. Like this one.

Ok maybe pixie dust is involved. But I'll gladly trade 2 WS for 1 cup at this point.

The WS is better, I wouldn't give it up. Having said that, it is nice to have the Cup.

Also, god damn, wouldn't it be nice if the Cubs could just get lucky for once and have a bs season like Baltimore is having.

aka, next year just be good even if it's completely overachieving.

I just hate it because it sours the whole postseason for me. Not to mention, I was really looking forward to watching the Nationals in the postseason and now I don't want to watch.

Don't even try and act like you didn't get a massive assist tonight. I'd bet even the players would admit as much (maybe not on the record).

That was an awful, awful call.

It's funny that a World Series winning team can have 5 different times to celebrate by rushing the mound and drinking champagne in the clubhouse.

-After clinching a playoff spot

-After winning the Wild Card game

-After winning the LDS

-After winning the LCS

-After winning the World Series

or...

8th inning of an elimination game, bases loaded in a 3 run game with 1 out and that drama was taken away because of a judgement call? That's frustrating as a baseball fan.

Also, the infield fly is designed to protect the hitting team from a double play, how was a double play remotely possible there? Why does the ump wait until Holliday calls him off? Why is if the outfield ump who isn't even there in the regular season, placed out there to keep bad calls in the playoffs from happening, who made that call? Frustrating.

This.

That may be the intent, but that's not how the rule is written or practiced.

In both the letter of the law and the way it is normally practiced, it was the right call. It just looked stupid as hell.

1998 Cubs were pretty close, especially when you consider how a decent power hitter turned into one of the greatest of all time in his age 29 season.

By the letter of the law he had the right to make the call, just like a plate ump has the right to call a pitch 4 ft outside a strike. That doesn't make it the right call. It is not how it is normally practiced.

I believe the Cubs are just a Joe Saunders away from making next years playoffs.

fixed: With a mid season Jim Thome acquisition.

Throw in some ridiculous luck and I'll agree.

I'm just glad these tool sheds will be spending half their time on a cubs' board while their team is in the playoffs. Again.

1) It was a pop fly

2) There were runners on first and 2nd with one out.

Those parts are indisputable, right?

Well, all that's left is whether an infielder could reach it with ordinary effort. Considering the umpire made the call when there was an infielder standing under it waiting to catch it, I'd find that to be a pretty reasonable judgment.

He waited until the ball was nearly on the ground though. It has to be called immediately and it wasn't. I'm guessing it was because he was unsure as to if the ball was going to be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort. Considering, the player was struggling to see the ball and at no point did it seem like he was going to make that play easily, I don't see why it should have been called.

Why doesn't the rule book just say "If the umpire thinks a double play can be turned on a drop, he'll call it." Otherwise it's just a free out for no reason.

I've seen that put forward a lot. Here's a screencap they posted over at GWB:

Arm is coming up, ball is just barely in the frame.

It has to be called immediately and it wasn't.

Don't see that in the rules.

A few frames before the previous picture. SS, who hadn't exactly sprinted to get there, is under the ball, holding his arms out to say that he's got it, and setting up to make the catch. That's when the umpire decided to make the call. I've heard a few umps from various sources say that you usually make the call on plays like that when an infielder sets up under it. Though granted, I've heard others say they would never make the call at all.

They didn't deserve to win the game? The call was highly questionable, or perhaps flat out bad, but the Cardinals were winning by three runs....with no guarantee that the Braves score any if the infield fly wasn't called.

By being the second WC, I can buy that the Cards don't deserve to be in the playoffs....but they played better than the other team in the wildcard game and deserved to win.

I have never seen 6.05(l) invoked and hope I never do:

6.05 A batter is out when—

(l) An infielder intentionally drops a fair fly ball or line drive, with first, first and

second, first and third, or first, second and third base occupied before two are out.

The ball is dead and runner or runners shall return to their original base or bases;

APPROVED RULING: In this situation, the batter is not out if the infielder

permits the ball to drop untouched to the ground, except when the Infield Fly rule applies.

Basically, when you see the SS or 2B knock down a line drive on purpose so they can turn two, it's supposed to be a dead ball and the runners return to their bases and the batter is out and there is basically an infield fly rule with a runner just on first base or on first and third. It's tweaked a little, but the overall idea is still the same.

The cards are still 5 back after last night, this whole thing is a joke. But, Selig will get applauded for it. We need more wild cards. That way we can get a sub .500 champ soon.

The debate's been had. I prefer 4 teams but would be happy with 6. I hate 5.

I just hate how they basically forced a tie breaker game, when there is no tie. You can't recreate the drama of last year. Not matter how hard you try. It's something that just has to happen on it's own.
