Wood's one of my all-time favorite Cubs. I'll miss him.

I'll always remember Harry and Steve talking anxiously in '97 (I think) about the Cubs' big 2 pitching prospects - Kerry Wood and Steve Rain.

Hearing rumors they are talking about retiring his number. I'm kind of against that. Had a few unbelievable years, but there's a reason he was on the Indians and Yankees.

Design a super nice plaque to put up in concourse in Wrigley somewhere and that's more than a fitting tribute to him.

Edit: Or maybe put a '20K' on a flag or a foul pole.

i'm pretty sure they already have something like this.

I do not think Wood should have his number retired. If you look at all of the Cubs who have retired numbers, they all happen to be in the HOF. As most of us said, he is one of our favorite Cubs and he'll be missed. However, I do not feel Kerry has done enough to warrant having his number hanging from the pole.

#10 was up there long before he was voted into the HOF.

They have a flag on the Wrigley field roof and have had it for years. Next to Sosa's 66 flag and Hack's 191 flag.

The Score is saying Wood wants to pitch today, retire tomorrow.

Yeah, evidently Sarah tweeting may have accelerated this process.

My wife can't keep a secret either.

Sorry it had to end like this Woody.

It does feel bittersweet. I am glad that he will retire a Cub though. A perfect ending would be to come in and pitch a scoreless 8th with 3 k's. I'd bet he wants to retire after the game to get one last chance to pitch in front of the Wrigley faithful. If that happens I sincerely hope we gets a standing ovation.

I love Kerry Wood, but if they retire his number would he be the worst player in MLB history to have his number retired?

Why would that matter at all?

The question is not IF he will get a standing ovation. The question is how long it will last.

So does Wood get called up to take his place with Volstad moving to the pen? Wrong thread? Shutup BeerHere?

I would think they would bring up a reliever who is ready to pitch ASAP to take his place, and wait to bring Travis up the day he is ready to pitch, 4 days from now.

Well I guess we are the lovable losers.

Steve Stone said:`I called that 20 strikeout game, and one where he was shaking after the game because he had put so much into it. Never was there a team assembled that could have touched him that day [of the 20 strikeouts]—not the 1927 Yankees or anyone. That was the epitome of Kerry—and Game 5 against Atlanta [in the 2003 National League division series, the victory sending the Cubs to the league championship series.]

``The sad part is there was also game 7 in Wrigley Field in 2003 [when the then-Florida Marlins defeated Wood and the Cubs to win the pennant.] It’s that [dichotomy] that is so like what fans have felt about the Cubs—they should have been better.

``His natural ability alone was outstanding, but his body never allowed him to be what he seemed destined to be.’’

Harold Baines. He's even got a statue at US Cellular.

I dont want to derail the Kerry Wood thread but I looked up Baines and holy crap he was waaaaaayyyy over-rated.

Bittersweet feeling. The 20 K game was the best single game pitching performance in Chicago history. One of my absolute all time favorite players in any sport. Sadly, will always be a what if next to his career.

Thanks Kerry.

The was the best game ever pitched in the history of baseball. Never have seen anything like that movement in my life. Sad to see him go.

Maybe CSN or MLBN will replay that game sometime soon with him retiring?

He's All 20 on Youtube at least.

Wish that showed his postgame interview. He was so nervous he looked like he was going to pass out.

This dude has his number retired:

Plus there are numbers retired for Gene Autry, August Busch Jr, and Carl Barger (1st president of the Marlins). Not to mention the Indians retired the number 455 in honor of the fans.

So in summary, not even close.

Edit:

Heres another one....played 88 total major league games and finished with 9 wins:

And this dude is almost even with Kerry Wood on B-R's ELOrater. He's 314 and Kerry is 316
