I'd say no to Tim's question if there was any college hitter worth a damn this year.

Same here. But there's not.

What's up with all these pitcher injuries, because there's a higher than average amount so far this year, right? Is this just a short term anomaly? Or are there some underlying things that are happening like pitchers throwing harder or more breaking pitches, poorer mechanics, smaller amounts of PED use?

Ken Rosenthal said it's a sprained elbow, results of the MRI are pending.

There's no totally correct answer. However, most of this general grouping of pitchers(last 5-10 years) have grown up playing baseball all year. Add in that even now there's not a true uniform way to coach these kids(no breaking balls til a certain age, pitch counts, etc) and we're seeing the destruction before our eyes.

:(

Now they're saying they're not sure if it's a strain or sprain due to the press release and press conference differing. Big difference, so hopefully it gets cleared up.

Yeah, I still do too. While drafting quantity will eventually work, it takes a long time to produce a TOR type that way, unless you get really lucky.

It takes a long time to produce one either way.

To put a finer point on this, the last 4 years there have been 33 seasons with 5+ fWAR from pitchers (8 per year). Verlander is the only player to make it there all 4 years, Felix, Kershaw, Lee three times, and Wainwright, Weaver, Halladay twice. That's 7 guys who have seen 5 WAR more than once in a four year span.

Jose Fernandez is getting an MRI today. Apparently his velocity was down last time out.

God, this [expletive] sucks.

It happened to a player on a Jeff Loria owned team. It's glorious.

Can't argue it from that perspective.

Don't we go through this like once or twice a year?

A sprain and a strain are the same type of injury.

@JCRMarlinsbeat: Source: #Marlins anticipate Fernandez will require season-ending elbow surgery.

A strain is muscle related while a sprain is ligament related no? If so, they aren't the same.

Ben Badler makes an interesting point (a lot of us, including myself, thought the Marlins were foolish to start Fernandez in the big leagues last year):

@BenBadler: Too many teams are leaving value on the table with their young arms. If the command is there, move them along quickly. Maximize value now.

@BenBadler: You want to manipulate service time with hitters, I get that. With pitchers, you might have a depreciating asset. Be aggressive.

I posted this in another thread the other day and davell mentioned a similar thing earlier too:

I heard an interesting interview with Tommy John the other day. He theorizes that there's more pitcher injuries now because these kids don't get the down time to let their arms recover in the off season because they're essentially playing year round. I hadn't heard that particular theory before and coming from a running background, it completely makes sense. I've seen a ton of runners ramp back up too quickly after a marathon and end up injured when if they had taken a month or two and just done some low, easy mileage they more than likely would have avoided any issues. With all the fall ball and summer leagues, these guys just don't get enough of a break

Thanks, so if this theory is true or at least parts of it we should see this problem stay the same or get even worse? As the guys coming up are a product of the year round baseball and the issue hasn't really been addressed or changed at the early levels yet. And thinking about it now, I can definitely see the year round/showcase baseball being a big cause of these pitching injuries.
