Shabazz to UCLA

Sounds like Noel is Georgetown bound too.

Bad day for UK recruiting. Shabazz was likely known to UCLA, I was surprised about Noel.

Apparently. I still think it is possible Cal jumps to the Knicks if they whore themselves out to 'em.

I think the stupid NBA draft eligibility rules have a lot more to do with ruining BB than Cal.

It would be better like the NFL, or if they wanted more out of the NBDL than bad collegiate seniors and 250 watching, have the draft like MLB with 3-4 supplemental rounds where you can draft HS kids and give them 3 yrs of service time in the NBDL before they become FAs (unless they get called up before then). Juco players could enter the draft after each year and 4-year schools, they have to wait until they turn 21 and have 1 year of service time in the NBDL.

Its not a fluke that both the NCAAs and NBAs popularity peaked at the same time (early 90s, IMO).

NBA popularity definitely peaked in the Jordan era, but I think it topped out in 1998. Since then it fell like a rock until 2007/2008, and it's only just now starting to come back to respectable levels.

NCAA popularity, though, I think has peaked much more recently, especially since now everyone can fill out an online bracket for the tournament.

I tend to agree with that. I'd argue ESPN has played a major role in college basketball's popularity as well. How many games a week would they air back in the early 90s? (Legit question, I have no idea)

Back in the early 90's, when ESPN was just ESPN, they'd air around 200 games a year. Mostly on Saturdays. CBS would air a Saturday game a week, and then they'd get the NCAA tournament.

Gee I wonder if the $200,000 has anything to do with it? Waiting for the Davis lawsuit to happen. So smart abuck. So smart.

And this kid was a pretty big Georgetown lean and suddenly is UK bound. Prolly Cal playing by the rules again.

If you're referring to the Davis family's lawsuit, I don't think they can file that anymore.

Man so I guess that outrage was just a show then. As Davis walks by and gives WWW a huge hug after winning the torney MOP. If people are really ok with what Cal is doing in Lexington I don't understand why.

Back then, still had the declining Celtics, Lakers, and Detroit. While you didn't have media access as there is today, college bball has declined b/c the quality has declined.

Not many are going to watch a UK game on Tues night in Jan like they would for UNLV or the Fab Five back in the early 90s.

While the internet and expanded TV made it more easier to follow, it also creates more options to watch something else.

ESPN had games on every weekday night (excepting Fridays -- though Thursday nights may have been off and on, or not always double headers) in the early 1990s. "Big Monday" has been around since 1987. There was also "Super Tuesday" and "Slam Bam Jam Wednesday" (or something like that, then "ACC Wednesday") in the 1990s. There wasn't the overlap with multiple channels as there is now, but you could still spend your weeknights watching college basketball on ESPN.

There was also local coverage of teams, meaning you could flip back and forth between your local team(s) and whatever ESPN was showing (though ESPN had exclusive rights, at least in my area, similar to now).

ESPN definitely has played a major role in college basketball's popularity.
