A Wrigley Field agreement approved by the city Landmarks Commission could pave the way for the Cubs to put advertising on the clock in the center field scoreboard and along the top of the outfield wall — proposals that have flown under the radar amid the public debate over renovations of the historic park.

While much of the attention has centered in recent weeks on controversial large video screens that could total 7,000 square feet in left and right fields, the commission last month approved a "master sign program" outlining the team's plans for as much as 45,000 square feet of advertisements on the ballpark's interior and exterior, roughly double what's there now.

Ads on the clock? Ok.

Ads on the old scoreboard is where I draw the line.

To each his own, but you have to remember this is what the Cubs are competing with when it comes to getting revenue, revenue that is necessary to compete for talent.

It ain't pretty, but I'm sick of sacrificing wins for ascetics.

I get it. My attitude has pretty much been that they can make Wrigley up like the mothership from Close Encounters of the Third Kind if it helps the team win ballgames, but I never would have thought they'd mess with the scoreboard.

But I'd probably get over it pretty quickly.

I'd get over it, and winning cures all, but it would hurt Wrigley's image and take a tiny chunk out of attendance until they start being good at sports again(soon please)

I hate to say it, but the scoreboard is functionally pretty useless in its current state. It's incapable of showing three of the games, nobody has any idea of who is pitching, hitting, or what is currently going on in any games until a half inning is over, and even then you need a translation guide to understand what the scoreboard player numbers mean. 90% of the people in the park use their smartphones to acquire information hundreds of times more useful than the scoreboard provides.

At this point, the only remotely useful portion of the scoreboard is the Cubs' score line and the divisional flags.

So you're saying it doesn't matter that the scoreboard is functional in that capacity.

Well, that is the function. It's the easiest place to look up and see what the score/inning/count is. I do not give a crap about other games' scores while I'm in Wrigley Field. If I am somewhere else I appreciate seeing the Cubs score up there, but if I check my phone it is more up to date than any of their scores, and I don't care if a Mets fan is in Chicago watching Cubs/Pirates and can't find out what the Mets score is.

If you want to argue down that route, they may as well just have a giant blown up picture of the scoreboard up there that provides no function.

While we're talking about the scoreboard, has anyone ever figured out the meaning of the numbers they use in the SP and RP columns on the non-Cubs games? It's been 13 years since my first game there and I still have no clue.

But that wouldn't appeal to people.

You need one of the official Cubs' scorecards. In the scorecard, it lists the other teams' pitchers alphabetically and assigns them numbers (from 1 to, say, 14 max). Those numbers are the ones they put up.

Ah, thanks. I had figured it was alphabetical in some way but wasn't sure.

Sounds like a deal has basically been reached. Final compromises:

Jumbotron: 4,500 feet (Cubs wanted 6k, Tunney wanted 4k, current scoreboard is ~2k)

Right Field Sign: 650 feet stationary--similar to current Toyota sign (Cubs wanted 10k & moving, Tunney wanted less)

Fireworks: There will be no fireworks or pyrotechnics allowed

Sounds like a win-win to me. 6k would have been enormous.

It has been said by others, but I don't think the Cubs ever thought they'd get 6K, knowing that having to compromise was always going to happen.

I was to the point where I almost was rooting for Tunney to lose more than the Cubs to win.

I usually just devote my Tunney-related thought to hoping that he falls victim to spontaneous human combustion.

Only one I really cared about. Would have been stupid.

I feel like that was a bluff demand that they never really wanted. I do wonder if that holds for concerts though. McCartney had fireworks going off at 1030 on a Monday.

You don't ask for what you want when it comes to business negotiations. You ask for more than what you want knowing you will have to negotiate down.
