Player facilities would be more towards the triangle, right? I don't know if I've seen anything that pinpointed the exact geography, but given that the clubhouse is slated for next offseason, I imagine that's the case. They wouldn't tear this down, put up the OF signage, then have to dig up more stuff for the underground clubhouse amenities.

yeah, they're already digging the hole in the triangle lot for the clubhouse. they even hope to have it mostly done by the end of next season...or done enough to show it to the players. not ready til 2016 though.

only thing going on inside bleachers as far as i know is the bullpens going there after next season.

In my dreams they just level the whole thing.

the irony is so far they're really mainly leveling one of the newest parts of the park

I know. I feel like I could be looking at pictures from 2006.

How is the infrastructure from the main stands being "modernized" from this rennovation? I doing remember seeing anything about them tearing up the grandstands and fixing structural issues, but I could be mistaken.

The process will probably look a lot like this (circa 1972.)

Well, I was lumping the bullpens into "player facilities", I guess. And where are they going to put the batting cages? Also, isn't there some kind of walkway/corridor for fans that will run under the bleachers, on the street side?

the batting cages will be where the current clubhouse is, alongside a new bar and auditorium.

and yeah, there will be room for the fans to walk inside/underneath the bleachers as seen in that rendering.

I'm no engineer, but I would think that creating space under the bleachers and preparing them to take on the additional stresses that coming from supporting the new signage (the big board especially) would require some sections to be completely re-constructed.

I'm really not surprised to big chunks being taken out.

Well, not only that, but they're expanding them and narrowing the streets. We knew they were tearing down the entirety of right and left field.

My original comment was just based on the fact that it was kind of funny/ironic that the first area being torn down and "renovated" was among the newest in the park.

It is. One of my first thoughts on seeing the pics was that the 2006 bleacher expansion was money wasted. Though I have no idea if the revenue from the added seats already recouped the cost of that renovation.

Extremely rough back of the napkin - If they actually sold every single one of those additional 1900 bleacher tickets, which they obviously didn't, let's say they averaged $35 a seat conservatively (in part to make up for unsold seats)...that's 1900 x $35 x 81 games x 9 seasons = $48.5M (not including the, what, 3 playoff games?)

wonder what they actually spent

Can't think of anything looking at those pictures but Andre Dawson saying, "when I hit one over the fence at Wrigley Field, I hit it over a tru-link fence."

This also doesn't include the extra beer, foam fingers, and whatnot sold.

does anyone know why they spray the firehose when they're demolishing...is that to reduce dust or something?

Cheap way to keep the asbestos under control.

Unless they classified it as the lowest rating, they would had to bring in someone to take care of it. I'm not sure if they put asbestos in concrete or the coating over the steel (to prevent rust and whatnot). If so, then yeah I could see them spray while they're tearing it down because of that, but it's mainly to knock down the dust so it's not all over the neighborhood.

What kind of machinery have they been using? I've only seen the claw looking one. Are they using a big saw to cut the concrete/steel? If so, they would spray on that so it won't overheat as it's cutting.

A-jersey was joking

B-a saw like that will have it's own water supply and won't need an external hose.

To keep the asbestos down..PTR didn't pay for proper abatement, so they're doing it old school.

Edit...damn, just saw Jerseys comment

Actually, the Tribune Co had the asbestos removed years ago, however PTR had it reinstalled when it was the only insulating material he could afford.

i can't remember...were the bleachers torn down to this extent in 05 for the expansion?

just curious because the coverage is making it seem like this is so crazy.

I believe was pretty close. I remember they had to have the supports on the warning track for the wall then too.

It was. The walls came down on the first day of the Sox' playoff run, so coverage was relatively muted.

I'm sure it's just the media glomming onto some rather jarring pictures of a "landmark" stadium in the midst of what, to a layman, appears to be a rather indelicate process.
