Yeah they really created a nice show with this.

Pat - "..and I have some breaking news." [some cheering with "Kerry" chants]. "The next person is the newest Cubs acquisition, and yes this name is familiar... Kerry Wood".

I"m pretty sure Woody, Garza and Reed were the only guys that I saw come out that didn't look completely miserable.

I KNOW! I'm glad someone else noticed that. Even Demp was pretty blah about the whole thing.

Edit: Actually Byrd looked pretty happy as well.

Soriano had the weirdest look, kind of a "Why the eff did I agree to come to this?

Chris Carpenter looked like he wanted to murder someone.

Guess he's still angsty about not getting called up in September.

41.

I'm guessing either Marcos Mateo (injured, out of options) or Alberto Cabrera (poor performance) get removed for Kerry.

Also why would all the Cubs be miserable at the convention?

I'm sure they weren't necessarily miserable, they just didn't really have much of a reaction when they were announced.

Steve Clevenger was the funniest.

Soriano got booed by a few people and Crane Kenney a bunch.

Wittenmyer:

Wood deal one year, 3mil plus a club option

Nice...love the club option.

Me too. It is a no-lose situation for the Cubs. If Wood has another good year, the team can bring him back again at a very fair price. If he doesn't, they can simply decline the option and he will most likely retire as a Cub. Any word on whether the deal includes a no-trade clause?

Is a non-elite reliever worth spending $3 mil on for a non-contending club? Probably not.

Would I gladly spend $3 mil per season on Kerry Wood to keep him a Cub for the rest of his career? Absolutely.

This is one of those few circumstances where heart > brain. At least as far as I'm concerned.

why the [expletive] are people booing crane kenney? if i ever go to a cubs convention in 20 years and crane kenney is still working for the cubs, i'm going to give him a standing ovation while everyone else is booing.

+1. I can't stand misinformed idiots.

For a long while I was leading the charge against misinformed idiots hating on Crane Kenny. But at a certain point I'm inclined to believe that where there's smoke, there's fire... and there's been a hell of a lot of smoke from even the respected beat writers.

So why can't all of these journalistic stalwarts find any fire besides "HE HAS HIS OWN UNIFORM" or "HE HIRED THE GREEK PRIEST" or "CLOWN KENNEY IS A NICKNAME I JUST USED" OR "I DON'T LIKE HIM"?

The Kenney meme took off so they're placating the meatheads that eat that [expletive] up. There always has to be a scapegoat.

I found this little blurb from MLBTradeRumors interesting.

Before re-signing with the Cubs, Kerry Wood agreed to a deal with another club and was preparing for his physical when the Cubs swooped in according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago. Levine hears that the Reds were most interested in Wood before he re-signed with Chicago, but it's unclear if they're the team he had the agreement with.

interesting that Kerry would willingly go play for Dusty again.

This is how I feel too. This is especially true since the team isn't going to be very good so at least fans can root for Wood and the payroll isn't much of an issue at all so the $3 million is basically irrelevant.

i like kerry wood a lot, but i am surprised to see so many people saying they are thrilled to have him around since the team is bad and they need something to root for. is the presence of an old middle reliever really going to change how much you enjoy watching a bad team? are you really going to turn on csn for three hours and sit around hoping your favorite player happens to get in so you can see a strikeout, a walk, and two pop flies?
