Kerry Wood still talking with multiple clubs and a deal with #Cubs is "far from done," says a BB source

Not sure I totally buy it given the Theo "shame on us if we don't resign him" quote earlier this week.

Seriously, do people really care that much if Wood comes back? Why on earth would he want to play for a team that has pretty much no chance of winning?
Posted

Yeah seriously. I think he was actually quoted saying that if he wasn't on the Cubs he would retire. Plus Theo said something like 2 days ago like "If we can't get this done we're doing something wrong"

Sorry I don't buy it and won't until it actually happens.

Business is business. First off, if Kerry signs somewhere else, I won't blame him. His quote came before it was probably apparent to him we were going to totally rebuild. Secondly, if we don't sign him, I won't blame Theo either. If Kerry wants 3.5 mill or something similar, it probably makes better sense for us to put that money into IFA's anyway. Nostalgia or not. Piss off the meatball fan? So what. There'll be enough excitement around this rebuild to where I think we'll still have plenty of folks showing up.

Theo also said Z would be given a chance to earn his way back onto the team, and then traded him to the Marlins.

I'm not saying Theo can't get it done, and I'm not saying one way or the other if it'll be good for Kerry to be back on the team. I'm just saying that Theo's word can't be taken at 100%.

Even if we did sign him for 2-2.5 mil, while it would be a great value it's really not something we need considering our existing pen options. I'd be fine with him coming back anyway, but if someone else offered him more money and/or years I'd be perfectly fine with it. He owes The Cubs nothing and The Cubs owe him nothing. I'd prefer he not sign with a rival, although we did smack him around something terrible when we faced him when he was with the Indians. As long as he's willing to sign elsewhere, he should have no trouble finding at least a 2/8 deal.

Sure but Kerry's can due to the fact that he accepted a crapload less money to come back to the Cubs and has consistently stated his desire to stay on the Cubs and only the Cubs.

There is really no benefit for Theo to lie about this. He's not trading Kerry or raising his value. Maybe to hold off the meatballs for a time, but eventually if he let Wood leave, he'd get crapped on for it.

Any fan who doesn't understand why Kerry Wood isn't a fit for this team has yet to figure out the direction Theo and Jed are taking this team and are going to crap on most of what they do.

Yet, you just said this in a another thread:

No on Hawpe plz

I can't imagine it's a possibility Jed and Theo would consider. What would we do with him?

The question that's been attached to most of this years signings.

Do you just jump from side to side depending on which thread you're in and hope no one notices?

Also, give me a break. Giving Kerry a couple million is not going to detract from what Theo's doing with the rest of the roster. If Reed Johnson deserves a million and a half to be a fifth outfielder, Kerry should get paid too.

Also, pot-kettle-black re: "figuring it out."

I want Wood signed to a Tim Wakefield type contract.

A never-ending series of club options at $2.5 with $0.5 in incentive money - $0.25 based on games finished and $0.25 based on appearances.

They better resign Woody.

Hopping on this. Honestly, if you're going to punt this year anyway, why not throw a fan fan favorite a bone and give the people at least something to cheer for this year? Is it really going to break the bank?

And yes, I'm aware Theo said that they weren't going to "punt" this year, but his moves say that he's doing just that, but also building for a very strong future.

just give kerry wood 4 million this year and give him brenly's job in 2013. everyone's happy.

i am legit curious if he wants to get into broadcasting. brenly's schtick is old, but he's still so much better than most of the morons out there.

i think he definitely wants to be a part of the cubs organization after he retires. i just assumed it would be broadcasting.

How is he not a fit for this team? If Kerry was asking for market value that would be another thing, but I am assuming like last year he's going to be signed somewhere in the 1.5-2 mil range.

From Phil Rodgers article tonight on the Rizzo deal:

Hoyer also said the Cubs continue to talk to Kerry Wood, who reportedly is close to signing a one-year deal, and reiterated they're still in the market for starting pitching.

I had thought that Theo told Wood they would sign later in the offseason so he can maneuver around the 40 man roster limits. Since the 40 has been full since the Reed signing, I don't think they could sign Wood now if they wanted to. I could be way off on that, but I'm not gonna look up anything at the moment

I'm not seeing the conflict here Art. That is the question attached to all of the signings, which is not to say there's a method to the madness. In regards to the first thing you pasted from another thread, if you don't get the context of the conversation it may sound like I'm against most of what he's done. The context was basically that if these players are low risk enoug it can't hurt to stock up and see what you have. As for Wood, in this very thread I stated that if they want to give Wood 2-2.5 mil, it's fine. However, if another team wants to give him more, he should take it. No point in overpaying for a reliever in what's likely to be a lost season.

It is possible they are close to making another trade and need to wait for that to happen in order to clear the 40 man spot. Otherwise there are no obvious guys that can be dropped unless they try to put someone like Casey Coleman through waivers. Not sure how much interest there were would be in him and whether Theo and Jed would even care if he was claimed.
