considering that theo has been paying jason varitek to be the team mascot for the last 3 years, i'd say he understands sentiment.

Theo understood Red Sox sentiment because he was a fan of the Red Sox.

We're not talking about bringing back Carlton Fisk to sign autographs. He kept a horrific player on a team whose success determined the security of his own job. A middle reliever is more important than a backup catcher, but not by much. There's no reason to not get this done.

If Kerry is seeking actual money now because the thought of taking a discount to play on what's likely to be a pretty bad team isn't all that appealing to him, there is. I'd actually be glad to see him go to the Phillies (based on their chances) and I'd have to root for them to win the Series, just like I did the Yankees in 2010.

Certainly a possibility, but what's "real money" to a a 34 old middle reliever? 3 million? If he doesn't want to play for the Cubs because they're going to be bad, that's fine, but I'm somewhat skeptical given his past willingness to stay with the Cubs. If somebody is offering 2 years at 6-7 million, they should just match it. Chances are he'll be a spokesman for the organization for a long, long time.

Can't he pitch a few years for The Phillies and come back as a spokesman? Wouldn't be the first time.

But you just said he was all business no sentiment and since his only gig was with the Sox, that must have been what you were alluding to.

This act of yours has grown tired.

He was brought to the Cubs to be all about business and has (had) no sentimental attachment to the Cubs. He was a fan of the Red Sox well before he was hired by them and had plenty of sentimental attachment to them. When Santo went to the White Sox, he did his job, but his sentimental attachment was with the Cubs. I'm sure that would be true if Kerry Wood signs somwhere else.

What is this based on?

I don't understand the question. It's common knowledge that Theo was a RS fan before he was hired by them and I would think it's pretty obvious that Santo and Wood have (had) an emotional attachment to the Cubs. I'm not knocking Theo, I'm just pointing out that he has a job to do with the Cubs and he's doing it without any sentimental attachment with the team.

The question is where is your evidence that he'll only act in "all business, no sentiment" terms with the Cubs? Signing Wood is about the only action he's had that would be higher on the sentiment scale than business sense scale and they said a week ago that they would get it done.

Unless he's torn Ronnie's flag off the pole, I'm not sure what evidence you've got that he's going to be all cold hearted here.

Considering the comments Ricketts in the past and Theo and Jed have made very recently about keeping Wood, allegiance to him, or not, it's something they all understand and want to happen. You don't say something to the effect of "it'll look bad on us, if we can't make this happen" unless you're trying your damndest. If Kerry has decided to pitch for a contender, then so be it. But, I'd bet anything, that we're doing everything in our power to keep him here. And that includes giving him more money than we probably should, given the state of our squad.

The rumor I heard on XM MLB Radio this morning is that he told the Phillies he wanted 1 year / 4 M and the Phillies were backing off on that. My guess is that he wants the Cubs to pay closer to the $4M than to the $1.5M he got last year. This is not a huge money difference when you consider they gave $1.15M to Reed Johnson without much hesitation so IMO the delay still probably has more to do with giving them time to make another move to clear the 40 man spot than it does with a sudden reluctance to sign him.

1 year at 4 mil is by no means unreasonable for a back end reliever if you're a contender. If that's what he's asking for someone will give it to him.

I wouldn't be opposed to the Cardinals signing him for 3 million.

Back the F-OFF, man.

That and what the Cardinals gave up for a few shotty months of DeRosa. Of course, that was looking a lot worse for them in 2010 when Chris Perez was looking like a world class closer and the Cardinals didn't go ahead and win the World Series without even having an established closer for most of the season. [expletive] Cardinals.

What's the point of this discussion? I think what he's trying to say is that a new boss is not going to be sentimental toward employees that he just met. I didn't see where he said that Epstein will "always" be cold hearted regarding the Cubs.

Maybe someday Robert California will be sentimental toward the employees of Dunder Mifflin but he's not likely to be sentimental beginning on day 1.

Thanks for understanding the point I was making. Sometimes you have to go outside of the organization to hire someone who isn't tied down with all of the sentimental baggage that comes with all that is the Chicago Cubs.

There are multiple points. The most obvious is Theo isn't going to not try to sign Wood, even at a little more than he's worth, b/c he's "all business." It doesn't take 10 years on the job to realize Wood's importance to fans.
