I had thought that Theo told Wood they would sign later in the offseason so he can maneuver around the 40 man roster limits. Since the 40 has been full since the Reed signing, I don't think they could sign Wood now if they wanted to. I could be way off on that, but I'm not gonna look up anything at the moment

It is possible they are close to making another trade and need to wait for that to happen in order to clear the 40 man spot. Otherwise there are no obvious guys that can be dropped unless they try to put someone like Casey Coleman through waivers. Not sure how much interest there were would be in him and whether Theo and Jed would even care if he was claimed.

Could they remove Jeff Bianchi? He was claimed on waivers from KC so does he have to stay on the 40 man roster?

They got him through the rule 5 draft so he has to stay not only on the 40, but also the 25 or they have to send him back.

With the amount of money we are saving this year, there is no excuse to not bring Wood back even if it does cost around 3-4 million. Someone can say that we'd be better using that money on IFA or the Cubans, but our payroll is so low right now that 3-4 million is nothing.

That being said, there is no way this deal isn't done before spring training. Theo would not have said what he said unless he was 95% sure that he was going to get a deal made.

No, they didn't. They got him on waivers. He's just like any other Cub minor leaguer on the 40-man roster (Lake, Vitters, Clevenger, etc.).

Lendy Castillo was the guy they got in the rule 5

That's right, not sure why I thought that was Bianchi.

The front office liked Bianchi enough to pick him up off waivers so I doubt they waive him so quickly to add another pitcher. If they have to drop someone from the 40 man roster to make room I have to think it most likely would be a pitcher. Either someone they think they can safely get through waivers or someone they wouldn't care if they lost.

Judging by the recent dealing that's been done, I woudnt be surprised to hear about trades that we aren't even fathoming at this point. Soto, Soriano, Byrd, Marmol, Dempster, Wells, DeWitt, Baker, Russell, Maine, and even Coleman are all guys that could be traded out of nowhere for prospects. Campana, Mateo, and Cabrera are guys on the 40 man that I could see making it through waivers unclaimed.

Re-signing Wood means we can slot him in at closer to give us the freedom to trade Marmol in a lost year. Granted, we'd need to find a setup guy, but in a lost season who cares. Try out any number of rotating bullpen arms and see if they stick.

Getting this done shouldn't be an issue with all the money they're saving by not signing free agents and dumping as much dead weight as they can.

Carpenter would fit in as the set-up man nicely. I'd like to see him in that role for an extended period anyway to give him late-game experience in a season where it doesn't matter.

Even if we do trade Marmol would it be more proactive to give various younger guys the chance? Carpenter and Shark would be first in line. Casey Weathers is said to have wicked stuff and if he could learn control he could get a chance. Not sure if Dolis has what it takes, but he could get a look too.

Our 40 man breaks down like this to me: Byrd, Garza, and Soriano will probably be gone before the end of the month. Along with one of Baker or Dewitt. Soto, Marmol, and Dempster will probably be gone by July 31st. Cabrera, Lendy Castillo, Gaub or Maine, Mateo, Weathers, and Bianchi are all guys I could see outrighted, if it came down to it.

If they move Byrd, Garza and Soriano by the end of this month then that activity combined with the Zambrano and Marshall trades will have been a house cleaning of epic proportions. I don't put anything past this front office but personally would be surprised if any more than one of those guys is gone by February.

The more I look at AL teams, I don't see a market whatsoever for Soriano. There are still DH types out there in FA and a few others available for trade, like Trumbo or Morales. We may be stuck with Soriano this year. On the other hand, I think both Garza and Byrd will be dealt by mid January, if we're dealing them. Garza, because we'll have to exchange arb numbers soon and any team trading for him would have to prefer starting from their own negotiating standpoint. Byrd, because Cespedes is going to be eligible right around then. My guess is we'd clear a spot, if we're serious about him. Same goes for Soler, if it takes a major league deal for him, which is my guess.

If Reed Johnson deserves a million and a half to be a fifth outfielder

that's not what he's being paid in 2012.

Insert $1.15 million and the point still stands.

$350K was hush money paid to Starlin's girl. That's nothing for a bigwig like Reed Johnson.

Luckily we're no longer on the hook for Z's 9M buyout.

Speaking of which, do we know what will become of that buyout, because adding that to the money already coming off the books pre 2013 would be a fairly big deal.

Wow... really???

so he might be overpaid by half a mil, i'm really not going to lose sleep over that. he can hit lefties and if he is confined to that role through the first few months, he might have reasonably good numbers and fetch a C-grade prospect at the deadline. i'm not fond of the signing but really, it doesn't matter much.

I'm not losing sleep over him being on the team, but I still see no purpose for him being on it. It's just such a completely un-Theo move to waste money and a 40 man roster spot on such a pointless player.

First off, I didn't even know there WAS a 9 mill buyout. Secondly, it got waived?

There isn't a $9 million buyout and never was. WSR has been convinced there was one though, even though it's been pointed out a few times there isn't one. So SSR was making a joke about it.

Before the trade BBR had it as a 19 mil option with 9 mil buyout. Might have been 8 mil but I assure your there was one. It would vest if he finished top 4 in the NL Cy Young. Just checked it again and it has a 19.25 vesting option but no longer mentions the buyout.
