Wood's comments tonight on Sports Sunday sure make it sound like he's seriously looking elsewhere. He said something to the effect of "The Cubs are still on my list, but it's not looking as promising as it was earlier."

Yea, he's been tweeting today...whether it's a negotiating ploy or not is anyone's guess but he's not ready to retire

@nlakoduk I have too much baseball left in me to retire. Hope to know where I will be playing, by the end of this week.

@MichaelSinger3 As of now, it's looking like I'm not going to be at the Convention.

I hate saying I don't care if he's a Cub or not, but I really don't. The money he probably is wanting could be spent smarter by us anyway, since we're not contending in 2012. Maybe we're just not a match? Just business, from both sides.

How exactly could the money be better spent? We're reaching the point where we're almost physically incapable of having more resources to throw at the one unrestricted IFA pool, and there's no other FA's we've been remotely tied to. On top of it, we aren't overflowing with capable bullpen arms in the high minors, we traded Marshall away, and we're wanting to move Samardzija to the rotation. The issue has to be a 40 man thing, and it makes me wonder why the non-guaranteed brigade of Corpas, Sonnanstine, Bianchi, and (should have been) Johnson were added as early as they were.

i also wouldn't really care if they removed someone like marcos mateo or scott maine from the 40-man. they're already very fringy and are going to be in the age 27/26 seasons, respectively. if they're removed from the 40-man and someone claims them, maybe we've lost a 7th inning guy but more likely we've lost a guy who is good enough for iowa but not good enough for a big league bullpen.

If we were to go out and get BOTH Cespedes and Soler and not trade Garza, maybe just Byrd, between now and the beginning of the season, our major league payroll would be over 120 mill and it looks like we should expect at least one Maholm/Francis type guy signed. Granted, I see your point about where's the rest of it going to go, but I really think we have the chance to spend around 10ish on IFA. Maybe you're right though, even with that happening, there's probably 3 to 5 mill left over that could go to Wood.

Not going to break my heart if he goes elsewhere, but kind of weird how he went from taking the deal last year where there were better deals on the table (weren't there?), and earlier this offseason his Cubs or retirement comment.

It also helped that he was very close to Jim Hendry, and the decision to come back happened after Ron Santo's funeral which was probably a who's who of Cubs legends which he possibly felt at home around on an emotional day.

Kerry knows how to negotiate, that's for sure. Saying he'll make his decision by Friday could put a real damper on the Convention, if he's going to be playing somewhere else.

Wood and the organization have enough mutual respect and understanding of one anothers plans to get out of the 2012 season to jocky over leverage for a few mil. Back end relievers are valuable and it's not out of the question that he has a 2 year deal on the table somewhere and Theo/Hoyer are telling him to take it. If we do end up paying him market value I hope it's with the understanding that we can trade him to a contender when the time comes.

When you say the organization, You must mean Ricketts and not Theo. I'm sure Ricketts understands what Wood means to the Cubs, but Theo is all business and no sentiment. Not saying that's all bad, but true.

Wait, didnt we specifically make the point not to seek Wood trades at the deadline for respect of his desire to finish his career with the Cubs? Screw this, we could have a propsect to show for Wood leaving (if he does).

Hendry didn't make any trades because they wanted to leave those decisions for the new FO, or whatever reason it was they gave.

considering that theo has been paying jason varitek to be the team mascot for the last 3 years, i'd say he understands sentiment.

Theo understood Red Sox sentiment because he was a fan of the Red Sox.

Ah, so he doesn't understand it here because he wasn't a fan. Makes sense.

That's why he said that stuff about needing to get him signed last week.

We're not talking about bringing back Carlton Fisk to sign autographs. He kept a horrific player on a team whose success determined the security of his own job. A middle reliever is more important than a backup catcher, but not by much. There's no reason to not get this done.
