#Cubs Hoyer says Maholm's won-loss record does not reflect his ability and that he has history of keeping his teams in games.

Hoyer directed that at @theKapMan

I'm wondering if his decision to sign for what appears to be under his market value has anything to do with having Theo at the helm. Is it a stretch to think that a lot of players would probably like to be part of a Theo Epstein run organization?

If they were close to a title I could see it, because being a part of the Cubs team that wins means you will have the chance to draw an income off that memory for the rest of your life. But I doubt many players will take a discounted 1 year deal just to be a part of year 1 of a 2-3 years rebuilding process.

My thoughts on the signing

I still can't believe how bad the Pirates infield defense was in 2010. Jeebus.

Dig the article. Were the Pirates infielders juggling flaming chainsaws inbetween pitches that year?

I think it's worth noting that Rizzo, who will almost certainly be up at some point this year, is also supposed to be above average with the glove.

Great deal. I'm assuming he's guaranteed a spot in the rotation. So if Garza isn't dealt, Wood-Volstad-Wells-??? compete for 4 and 5?

Wood and Volstad get the spots. Wells as a No. 6 I can live with.

Why should Volstad get a spot over Wells?

Because he's better, more good, and less awful.

Incentives for the deal:

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal

Maholm can earn max of $550K in incentives each year with #Cubs: $50K at 150 IP and then $100K at 160, 170, 180, 190, and 200 IP. #MLB

Also ridiculously reasonable.

I might have been the most outspoken opponent of Maholm the entire offseason, but this is a really nice deal. Maholm isn't good, but at 1 year/$4.25 million with around a half million in mostly easily attainable incentives, he's a decent innings eater. He'll also have the potential to be a pretty good trade chip at the deadline if he can hold his ERA in that 3 area it's been two of the past three years.

I was concerned that given his ERA two of the past three years and the fact that he seems to be considered a "dependable veteran" that the market wouldn't drop enough for us to get a reasonable deal. I fully expected at least 2 years, probably 3, and as much as $8-10 million per year. However, Theo proved me very wrong and I'm very happy he did.

yeah considering that people give bums like suppan and randy wolf almost $10m a year to eat innings, it's a bit shocking that maholm is only worth $5m/year on the open market. guessing that shoulder injury caused some concern and teams don't properly assess how the lousy pirates' defense affected his overall stats.

Guys like Suppan and Wolf are exactly the reason I was really concerned about the contract Maholm would get. He's a veteran, left-handed, and can pitch 150-200 innings without being awful. I really thought that would get him a deal of some significance from somebody, not a below market value one year deal.

Both were ill advised and hopefully they're a big part of the reason why pitchers like that aren't getting 10m/year anymore. Both were guys that had never been anything special, especially Suppan who earned his payday as a result of 2 starts in the previous NLCS.

I really like this deal. If he pitches really well you can spin him to a contender at the deadline for more prospects. The low cost and club option would make him an attractive target.

If things go really well this year and it looks like the team could compete in 2013, you get to keep him at a reasonable price.

PSD insider says he's pretty sure corresponding move is taking Bianchi off the 40 man.

Did he mention anything regarding the talks with Detroit?

Nah, thhe last he said on that was about a week ago. Some Detroit fan said giving up Turner was too much for Garza and Marlin said he'd be pissed then, because if Detroit gets him it's Turner and more.
