Maybe Wood and Volstad will piggyback.

Makes sense with Theo's statements about pitcher health being the new market inefficiency.

So I have Swaim on my twitter feed and the actually signing appears to have been broken by Maholm himself. When was the last time that happened?

Sounds like speculation, but...

Scott Swaim @MLBInsideNews

As @BleacherNation points out, the Cubs 40 man is full. I am expecting the corresponding move to be Garza to DET

At this point, that's not going too far out on a limb.

I should say so.

Theo and Jed must take turns sleeping with the amount of stuff they've been doing.

Unless turner isn't involved, our 40 would probably stay the same after a Garza trade.... Unless they would want one of our other vets

Sending someone like Baker would make sense.

I would like this signing quite a bit if the Cubs were looking to fill out the back of the rotation. But as it looks now, all of the starters will be back of the rotation quality. Waiting to see what the terms are.

Barney would actually make a ton of sense for the Tigers. They could move Barney back to SS, shift Peralta over to 3B, and kick Inge to the curb. Of course... he's young, cheap, and moderately productive. That makes it unlikely the Cubs deal him unless DD is willing to pay for it.

Baker and Byrd are both useful pieces that aren't perfect fits for the Tigers but could be of some use. I'd hope we get some degree of consideration for either.

DeWitt is a pretty blah piece that is a safe throw-in DD shouldn't have to pay anything for. But he is a lefty and the Tigers do have Raburn and Inge who mash on lefties... so if you discount his funky reverse platoon splits he might be somewhat attractive to the Tigers.

lol they're probably a bit annoyed with maholm for leaking it

This isn't the "Cubs Way". I fully expect to see Maholom traded before morning as he has hacked off the stealth mothership.

I posted this somewhere, but I could see James Russell perhaps having some interest to the Tigers as a matchup lefty to give their pen that additional depth.

Isn't Russell cheap for a few more years though?

Never let a middle reliever get in the way.

That would leave the team with Gaub, Maine, and Beliveau as the LH RP on the 40 man. LH RP shouldn't exactly be an organizational priority, but still, ick.

I like the move. Maholm isn't a sexy pitcher (you know what I mean), but has been fairly good in the past, albeit inconsistent. Will be a good test for our new pitching coach.

Assuming Garza is traded, our rotation would be something like

Dempster

Maholm

Wood

Volstad

Wells/Sonnanstine

Am I missing anyone? Again not a sexy rotation (again, you know what I mean), and it will have its problems but it could be worse.

Say, that's a great slogan for the 2012 Cubs: It could be worse!

As ugly as that is, if that led to a better return package, I'd be all for it.

Coleman would probably slot in at 7. Depending on what we would deem Turner's timetable as. My guess is we'd still add one more guy, maybe even a NRI, to compete here. They keep talking about depth, not sure if they even think of Coleman as that.

There's a pretty decent chance that the Garza deal will send back a young SP who could slot into the rotation (though it wouldn't shock me to see us start a Turner or Drabek or Banuelos at AAA).

There's also a pretty decent chance that Dempster is traded before opening day.

I would be absolutely shocked if Sonnanstine is thought of as anything more than an emergency fill-in option we hide at AAA until June.

What do you mean by sexy?
