Rizzo would probably do poorly in that ballpark still. That place is where offensive careers go to die.

And pitchers careers are reborn. If I'm a once good pitcher or pitching prospect *Chris Volstad* who's hit the skids, I'm begging the Padres to give me a 1 year deal or for my team to trade me to them in hopes of some sucker giving me a 3 year deal the following.

yeah, rizzo has equaled alonso's HR output already.

Part Petco, Part Alonso not being good. .837 MiLB OPS while being old for some levels. 36 HR in 1300+ MiLB PA. Never understood the hype.

I don't believe Alonso isn't a good hitter. As you pointed out Petco is an offensive disaster.

He also pointed out less than overwhelming numbers to support Alonso not being that good of a hitter.

is the GM that gives chris volstad a 3 yr deal the same guy that calls to trade for castro and ends up taking reed johnson?

Hell, as long as they're on the phone, right?

the people who constantly pick on wsr are worse than wsr. seriously, it's not hard to ignore someone. it's always the same people too. then one wsr comment turns into a full page of people making the same jokes over and over. and now i'm adding to it.

Please stay on topic.

Ironically, that's what a GM would say if they called for Castro and Theo tried to sell them on Reed Johnson instead.

Okay, that was funny.

But please stay on topic. :)

also, it appears that just about everyone was quite happy with this deal. which makes me wonder, what were the padres thinking at the time? did they get spooked by rizzo's terrible first crack at the big leagues? were they really that excited about yonder alonso? (a prospect whose hype i never really understood)

and as a side note, the cubs had a black hole at first base in that offseason, and steered clear of contracts that now appear disastrous (pujols, fielder) and instead got a guy who seems likely to be an absolute crazy discount for basically a decade with the cubs. cheers to you, theo and co. this was a master stroke.

The trade worked out really great for us, but I'm sure that the Padres thought it was a decent deal at the time. They had a decent prospect (Alonso) at 1B, they played in a huge ballpark that hurts power hitters (Rizzo) and rewards pitchers (Cashner), and obviously had no way of knowing that Cashner would be injury prone.

Cashner had just gone through an injury-plagued 2011, so there was at least a little reason to believe that was the case.

wow the padres thought the trade they agreed to with the cubs was a "decent deal at the time"? you don't say.

i also like how the padres had no way to know that a guy who missed a month with a strained oblique in 2010 and then pitched all of 15 innings in 2011 would be injury prone.

Yeah, part of the reason the FO dealt Cashner was they weren't sold on him staying healthy. It seemed to be a concern outside of the org too.

Obviously, the Pads had Alonso and Rizzo, so they had their choice of which one to trade. I guess that initial struggle stayed too fresh in their minds, much to our advantage.

Hoyer and McLeod knew what the Pads thought on Rizzo too, so that was definitely helpful.

giving the Padres a little bit of credit, Rizzo's had to sort of overhaul his batting stance a couple times to get to the point where he is now; with the Padres his hands were way high up and you had scouts saying he "couldn't get around on a fastball starting with a 9", and in his second year with us his hands were too low sapping his AVG

he seems to have found a perfect balance now...

I have to imagine there was some our guys vs. their guys bias going on as well with the change in the SD FO that had just happened, which likely clouded their judgement a bit.

I have no idea who Na was, but damn him for getting this song stuck in my head:

Though here's SD looking at this trade now:

Andrew Cashner is 1-7 with a 2.89 ERA...how is that possible

edit: 12(!) unearned runs- counting them, he'd have 4.82 ERA
