I read on another message board that the 2 prospects we received in the deal were Kevin Coddington and Travis Webb. If that is true, how does everyone feel about that?

Was that other message board last page?

No I honestly haven't read through this thread at all. I heard about the trade from a Cincy fan on a football message board, and couldn't find anything other than "prospects" anywhere else.

Coddington/Webb would be ... disappointing. Two guys that are system fillers, if they make it past spring, barring a surprising development in their abilities. Here's hoping for better.

They may be valuable but there's a good chance they aren't highly valuable. Ready to contribute guys can just be people like Colvin who aren't going to get any better. If you emphasize just getting guys who are ready that's a good way to lock-in very mediocre seasons.

The idea is that you spend around it. You put up with Darwin Barney and Travis Wood so that you can afford Prince Fielder and Yu Darvish.

In theory, anyway.

In theory, communism works. In theory.

Communism works in theory if you believe in the power of the repressive state. Shame on those who still believe in that.

Also waiting on the prospects, though I doubt they will amount to much. Still love Theo, though.

Jonathon Mota and Marquez Smith are system fillers. These guys are JR Mathes and Matt Camp.

My buddy (pro scout for rangers) thinks one of the prospects could be Daniel Corcino.

Much more promising than some of the other prospects listed. Works in the low 90's and tops out at 97mph. Seems to have started to figure things out.

The other two Coddington and Ward make absolutely no sense.

The other name he gave me was Yorman Rodriguez

Corcino and Rodriguez. Yes please.

KBBL's going to give me something stupid!

As great as that would be. We most likely would only get one

Sounds like another player with a lot of upside. I would actually like this trade if those are the two prospects involved.

I would prefer Corcino to Rodriguez, but either one would be decent.

Keith Law was asked about the prospects we're getting, said Corcino wasn't one of the names he heard. Did say Cub fans should be pleased though, they're not zeroes.

I'm not a huge Travis Wood fan, but 5 years of cost control of him for Marshall isn't bad, the more I think about it. I hope we get a decent prospect, but in the end, the new CBA actually hurts the value of guys like Marshall somewhat. Since there's no compensation for them anymore.

This needs to be repeated. Marshall's been an excellent relief pitcher for the Cubs, but they were not going to get anything for him in terms of draft compensation following this season. Frankly, if they held onto him and a deal fell through at the deadline, they'd be stuck with Marshall with nothing to show for it. It's part of the reason the Papelbon signing was so damn hilarious after the new CBA was announced.

I like Marshall and it sucks to see him go, but considering the Cubs traded him for a young, cost-controlled pitcher and two prospects, this is actually a pretty good deal.

On the flip side, the Cubs will be able to re-sign Marshall after next season without having to give up any draft picks if they so choose.

I'd take Corcino and a heartbeat, but he's arguably their best arm. Looking at it from their perspective, hard for me to see them giving up a borderline ready arm in Webb and their top prospect arm. I'd love it, though.

As a total side note, while it's not like we need more lefty pen options in the upper levels, I wouldn't mind someone like Donnie Joseph as the third piece. Or someone like a David Vidal as a 3rd piece, someone who could perhaps slide in at 3rd base in Daytona to start 2012.

For me it's all about pitching depth. We all know how awful Lopez, Coleman, Davis and Russell were last year. We know we need SP depth and we just got some. That was the biggest weakness on the team last year and acquiring Wood strengthens that. Even if he's a #4 or 5 - he's much better than what we had last year.

Who cares about pitching depth when your team isn't going to be any good?

So we shouldn't improve our pitching depth b/c we're not going to be good? Should we even play games next year or just forfeit the season?

Wow.
