Good layout of how Mackanin did in his interview yesterday in Boston. Here's a good little quote that'll get you guys hot and bothered a bit.

He also carried an iPad, something that surely caught the eye of the Generation X executives who interviewed him.

“I love statistical analysis,’’ Mackanin said, noting he used it extensively when scouting for the Yankees in 2008. “It’s very important. Numbers mean something.’’

Heres the full article by my boy Peter Abe at the Globe.

It's fairly unusual to see 3 premier franchises all competing for a manager at the same time. How would you rate the openings?

1.Boston

2.Chicago

3.St.Louis

Not so sure about this, given the events of the last month.

Boston still has a 160 Million dollar payroll, smart people in the front office and a crap ton of talent on the Roster. It's the second best job in baseball. Chicago has some work to do, but its a big market and a chance to get in on the ground floor and become a freaking hero. St. Louis just won a WS and can only go down from where they are at now. In addition they were a hot team that played above their talent level for a 3 weeks and won a championship. Couple that with the Shadow of a very popular LaRussa that you are replacing and the chance your best player is leaving makes that job less attractive IMO.

The way this offseason is going, I half expect the Cubs to get Mackanin (manager), Maddux (PC), Sveum (HC) and Martinez (BC).

are you on drugs?

AREYOUACOP?

Give credit where credit is due, assholes. This is the best post in the thread.

That being said - you should go out on top and never post again.

I don't see how having a successful playoff run makes an opening any more attractive than it would've been without said playoff run.

If anything, it might be marginally worse because of expectations.

Their payroll is also dwarfed by a division rival, ownership threw the last group under the bus despite 2 WS and a bunch of success. 90 win seasons are a huge disappointment. The fan base is insane. Anything less than 2 WS titles in the next decade will be deemed disappointing.

There's a lot of negative about that gig.

I took that as stating Boston's internal implosion muddies the water there.

I agree on St. Louis being behind the Cubs/ Sox by a fairly decent margin. My problem in ranking the top two is based more on perception moving forward. It's not only what the Cubs and Ricketts have put together in such a short time here that interests me, but what has happened to the once vaunted Red Sox front office and team in general. The Cubs are on the rise with an owner that has only very recently shown his mettle.

The Sox on the other hand, could be perceived as being in a state of flux. The events that have transpired there have been the mirror opposite to what has gone on in Chicago. The Cubs front office has got to be viewed as having more star power/ a more solid brain trust moving forward at this point. Throw in the shenanigans pulled by Henry and Lucchino in Boston and it makes picking the most desirable place to play a bit more difficult.

The Red Sox may have a larger payroll at this point, but also have shown a willingness to throw players/ management under the bus. This type of ownership behavior/ business culture resonates with prospective employees in my opinion. Tough call who has the top job.

Ah, yea. Well... I guess it's a toss up... Work for lunatics in Boston with a world series roster or work for bauces in Chicago with anywhere from a shitty roster to a decent one.

I had on ESPN briefly last night and the host said something like: "The Cardinals, Dodgers and Cubs, three marquee franchises going through some turmoil right now." I couldn't understand how what the Cubs and Cardinals are going through is turmoil while the Red Sox are not mentioned.

I did have an irrational love for Davey as a player though, even after the left the Cubs.

It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one. He was always one of my favorite players, even after he left the Cubs, then returned briefly, then left again.

With that said, I know very little about his managerial qualifications other than having sat on the bench with Maddon.

I cant figure out how we are going through turmoil at all. it all feels too good.

Agreed. If this is turmoil, could we have more please? What is the next step up from turmoil? Revolt? Anarchy?

What would those look like if this is turmoil now?

Chicago is on the way up after shelling out for a big money FO to bring in big money talent. Boston is still appealing with a star laden lineup and rotation, but like JCF mentioned there's alot of negativity over there. St. Louis I don't know enough about so I figure they're a very close 3rd...I think they'd be a great fit for the Phillies bench coach guy, but so would Boston with their talented veteran roster...

espn.com had a "quade is their latest goat" story up and somebody else wrote a "firing quade isn't fair story". I also think Sandberg talking to STL is perceived nationally as a mark against the Cubs for some reason.

I don't see how it is turmoil at all, but espn has never been good at being in tune with what is going on.

So the best manager would just be the guy who would make the most obvious decisions and not mess anything up. That's what I've always thought, but I was arguing with someone who claimed that managers have the ability to improve their team. He cited Kirk Gibson this year and I thought he was crazy.

Anyways I want Martinez just to piss off Ryno. Then hire Raffy as a hitting coach/trainer. :P

The obvious response is that ESPN must not consider the Red Sox aren't a marquee franchise.

@PWSullivan

Mackanin to interview for Cubs job Friday and Mike Maddux next on list of interviews

@PWSullivan

Dale Sveum expected to get intv later. Cubs will not officially intv Francona but remains a possibility.

I never really knew much about Mackanin I just remember he was part of the trusted Advance Scouts that they would show for the Yankees scouting out the next playoff opponent. I remember that I always thought he had sweet hair and a nice leather jacket. He looked the part of a scout.
