It's the grey on the chin that really brings it home.

Boston still has a 160 Million dollar payroll, smart people in the front office and a crap ton of talent on the Roster. It's the second best job in baseball.

Their payroll is also dwarfed by a division rival, ownership threw the last group under the bus despite 2 WS and a bunch of success. 90 win seasons are a huge disappointment. The fan base is insane. Anything less than 2 WS titles in the next decade will be deemed disappointing.

There's a lot of negative about that gig.

In contrast, the Cubs were fairly decent to both Hendry and Quade while nudging them out the door. That may just make them look a bit more attractive than the Sox.

That and as Tony LaRussa stated the allure of potentially bringing a WS title to the Cubs.

New Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said that the Cubs and Red Sox lists aren't identical.

"We did a lot of work together right after Tito (Terry Francona) left, and since Theo's left, our list has probably changed a little bit, and I don't know what his list looks like," Cherington said. "This hire in Boston -- Theo mentioned this before -- the manager-general manager relationship is critical, and it's got to be one where you can develop a mutual respect. You can disagree and argue and wake up the next morning and go back to work together, so that personal relationship is key. And the person that I would develop that kind of good working relationship with may be different than the person that Theo would.

"So I don't think we're looking for the same person even if some of the candidates we might consider could be similar.''

I think I'm firmly in the Maddux camp.

No Sandberg talk in this thread, please.

Didn't Dusty Baker always talk about Cliff Floyd becoming a manager one day, even letting him manage a couple meaningless games at the end of seasons?

I wonder what he's up to.

Dusty never managed Cliff Floyd.

I think he means Lenny [expletive] Harris.

Just catching up on this manager stuff......what has Dave Martinez (or Dale Sveum) done that has everyone riding their jock right now?

Reputations for being analysis-heavy managers in saber-savvy organizations.

He's been Maddon's bench coach in TB and obviously Maddon is highly regarded and they have had major success. By all accounts he shares Maddon's coaching philosophy and is assumed to be a stats/saber/analytic guy. Also he is in his late 40's so he's a younger guy who could grow with the current regime instead of bringing in a older guy who might not be here when we would be ready to go on a run. He's my number one choice, fwiw. He is also a former Cub, if that does anything for you, so he has that going on... Plus he has quite the look going....

And suddenly, there's no doubt who I want to be the next manager.

These beard jockeys must have extremely forgiving wives. Either that, or extremely gullible ones.

Shave that ugly, stinky bird's nest.
