Bad News Bears isn't really a kids movie so much as an adult movie with kids.

Oh, I don't know, it was my favorite movie as a kid. I saw it in 1976, I was 7, and I loved it, so did most of my friends. The teachers weren't real happy that we were quoting it in school, however, especially after the trophy incident with Mrs. Sampson's class where someone quoted the Tanner "hey, Yankees, you can take your apology and your trophy..." comment. Love that movie, though.

Sounds like you were a pretty cool 7-year-old. No wonder you didn't grow up to run a baseball team.

re: Pete Mackanin

A caller called the Score this morning, he knew Mackanin growing up at Brother Rice. I guess Mackanin coached in the Cubs minor league system(coached Mark Grace) and coached the Cubs AAA team. Well I guess the big league club was visiting and in the club house was a dart board that had picks of Jim Frey and Don Zimmer on it. When they saw this Mackanin was fired within the week.

Just an interesting piece of trivia.

"Seems to be" in this context means Wittenmeyer wants it to be.

I think I have to join him on this dream. Mike Maddux would be such a coup for this franchise....he's arguably the best coach in baseball right now...and I absolutely love what Texas has said they're doing with their pitchers (something akin to pitch counts are for c-words).

Other than I could actually play baseball, I was more like Oglevie than Tanner or Leak.

Yes, definitely bring him here so Nolan Ryan can ruin all our arms

He coached the entire 1988 season at Iowa. It's possible that's why he was let go at the end of the season, but he wasn't fired early because of it.

Martinez to the Cubs.

Sandberg to the Birds.

Mackanin to the Sawx.

Next!

Really liking the idea of Sandberg and Martinez starting a whole new chapter in the Cubs/ Cards rivalry...

How can so much wrong be fit into one sentence?

Anyway, Yeah that's what's been going on in Texas. Ruined arms all over the place. They work those guys like dogs out there with their crazy, useless ideas. If they knew half of what we know then they'd know to live in fear of pitch counts. Injuries be right around the corner, if not closer.

Is there actually support for this somewhere?

Texas thinks pitch counts are for "c-words".

That is why they've had a pitcher throw over 132 pitches just once since Maddux became pitching coach there, haven't had a single pitcher among the top 10 in PAP, and only had one pitcher among the top 30 in any year.

I guess the c word is champions. Of the AL, of course. Twice.

All these names sound good, but most importantly I just want a guy who can manage a damn bullpen and pull a starter when he's gassed and not leave in Dempster in when he's obviously throwing beach balls up there and putting guys like Grabow in the game in critical situations. Also, not put Koyie [expletive] Hill in the game when Geo is on the bench in a pinch hit situation with the game on the line. We need the Anti-Quade-Piniella.

What a bunch of meatheads right? I mean pitch count studies were soooo conclusive, how dare they try to push forward somehow?

This doesn't mean they don't take care of their pitchers either....IMO Ranger pitchers are amongst the most well conditioned in the sport...though there's no available data that readily supports that.

I know Ryan is quoted as saying that pitchers aren't working enough these days, but I don't know much about their actual program. Can you expand your point since you seem to have some idea of what is going on there?

Or are you just going all old-school with the "pitchers these guys are pansies" kind of thing?

Possessing that kind of movie can get you in an awful lot of trouble.

No, they legtimately support pitchers doing more THROWING on the side to build and maintain arm strength. Also if you've ready any of Tom House's books I'm sure they use alot of those workouts plus whatever the 21st century's research has shown. I expect their pitchers are on a very specific and tough diet and exercise program. They probably make sure each guy can repeat his delivery thoroughly as many times as that guy can...this is just guessing though...that said Im a huge believer in conditioning being a key to health, and their results at everything that needs to be said.

I don't believe today's pitchers are pansies so much as they're taught to be pansies by those who work with raw pitch count numbers with little to no context. For instance, those Garza starts this year where he threw 123 a couple of times late and drew the ire of a couple posters. I mean really, a 27 who is as physically fit and built as Garza can't handle a couple of 123 pitch games late in the season where he was on cruise control most of the time?

I would love for the Cubs to bite off some of what the Rangers are chewing on.

I don't see anything there that supports your last sentence about c-words. And given that they have a great rep by PAP standards, something tells me Maddux knows how to balance his macho owner with getting the best out of his pitchers.

Mackanin managed the Iowa Cubs for 2 full seasons. If he was fired(rather than leaving to take another job for the 1990 season) it may have been because he went 62-82 in that 2nd season.
