Maybe he's saying he hates the old stats that fantasy baseball uses. I don't want to be a fantasy manager, worrying about R, RBI, and AVG. It's WAR or nothing for this guy!

he only plays strat-o-matic, he doesn't want to dick around with guessing who's going to get saves for the orioles

Sandy, you're trying too hard to follow up Maddux.

Is Alomar the last candidate?

Last of the first batch.

Might be more, might not be.

“We’ll certainly make some phone calls, and I wouldn’t guarantee that it is,” Hoyer said. “But we feel really good about the four guys we brought in. We had four very good interviewees. I wouldn’t rule out an additional candidate, but it’s not a certainty either.”

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona remains interested in the vacancy, but president of baseball operations Theo Epstein has said he didn’t need to be interviewed if the Cubs consider him for the job.

Is Francona being considered?

“Certainly there are conversations that have gone on between Theo and ‘Tito,’” Hoyer said. They’ve had a great relationship for a long time. I’d let Theo expand on those conversations. He’s the one who’s had them. He’s the one who had the GM-manager relationship with him for a long time.”

Epstein was unavailable for comment.

TE: Ok, Dusty, it's the NLCS, game 1, your team is tied in the 11th, and the opponent has the pitcher's spot due up. On the bench, they have Lenny Harris, a lefty and Mike Lowell, a righty. Your right-handed closer is in the game, and Harris is up in the on-deck circle. What would you do next?

DB: There are a few factors I need to know first.

TE: Sure. What resources do you need?

DB: Who has been a better pinch hitter in night games in October in Wrigley?

TE: Uhh...Harris is 1-1, batting 1.000, and Lowell has no data.

DB: Put in Guthrie and pitch to Lowell. I fear the devil you don't know over the devil you do, if you catch my drift. Plus, I think I've been fishing with Lenny Harris before, so he'd know my secrets.

TE: I think we've heard all we need to here. We'll...let you know.

Funny, because he said in an interview yesterday he wouldn't even attempt to be as funny as Maddux was.

Gotta give Alomar props to obviously stick to his beliefs and not pander to Theo and co. Not sure why he'd interview knowing what the Cubs are looking for.

I wish Theo randomly interviewed Dusty just so they could laugh their asses off at some of his responses. If they could somehow record the interview and leak it to the Internet it would be very therapeutic for Cubs fans.

Dusty, it's the 8th inning, you're up by 9, and your starting pitcher has thrown 120 pitches and his next start is likely to be very important. What do you do?

FIXED.

Alright Dusty, what would you do if you walked out to the dugout where you stand every game and noticed a huge steaming pile of [expletive]?

The only answer I would accept from Dusty Baker to that question is "I'd eat it and die."

Not sticking up for Dusty at all, but the scenario you just suggested is one where Mike Maddux may leave his pitcher in. He was the pitching coach for Nolan Ryan's team who was very open about ignoring pitch counts. Now would Maddux have let Prior stay out there during that inning without so much as a mound visit? I doubt it. Just saying, Maddux isn't going to make that decision based on pitch count.

I REALLY doubt Maddux leaves Prior in that game to throw useless innings in a blowout. They believe in building up arm strength by having guys pitch a lot as they develop. Prior didn't need his arm strength built up in middle October.

As someone posted, they were very good about not abusing pitchers though. So while they build up arm strength thru conditioning, Maddux isn't likely to have guys throwing 130+ pitches all the time.

iirc, Texas had very few starters throw that many pitches in a game this year.

Yeah, Dusty had Prior throwing 120+ with regularity as a kid throwing more innings than he ever had before (not to mention after he had a collision with Marcus Giles where he landed on his shoulder). CJ Wilson went over 120 twice this year. Prior went over 130 three times in September alone, and again in his first postseason start. The big three averaged 113, 111 and 107 pitches per start in 2003 (Prior was the most), while CJ averaged 105 this year and the next two highest were at 100.

Don't mistake coaches willing to build up arm strength with what Dusty did to his pitchers. He abused the crap out of them and should never be excused for his ignorance.
