As cool as it'd be if we could get Tito, I actually think I'm firmly backing Maddux at this point and it's not even just because of the possibility he could bring Greg in as his pitching coach, although that doesn't exactly hurt either.

As much as I have been starting to like Maddux, Tito is still the clear #1 on my list. He has been since day 1. I would be ECSTATIC to reunite the old Boston family. Why not? They all won 2 world series together. Francona was a key part in both of those. Not to mention that he is the only candidate with any real experience.

I'm not even sure I've heard an argument that convinces me that Francona is actually a good manager. All I hear is experience and World Series rings. Plenty of bad managers have that stuff.

I do have some smart Red Sox fan friends who would bitch about him a lot. Particularly his lineups at times.

I think even the smartest baseball fans bitch about their favorite team's manager. It's just part of being a sports fan.

The things they were bitching about are things I don't want to bitch about.

And I still haven't heard the argument for Francona...would he come out of one of these interviews saying the things we're looking to hear from the other guys? Just give me a quote or a story or something. Anything.

The best and only argument I guess I would really need for Francona is if Theo thinks enough of him to rehire him, then it's going to be good enough for me in the end.

And I think Theo's comments on the matter already (especially if you combine it with this newest report about Francona wanting the job badly) seem to at least suggest that he doesn't want to hire him. Whatever the reason for that is, we don't really know, obviously.

"The manager is a very important piece of the puzzle," Epstein said. "He's the leader of the major league club. I'd say we are moving forward with that, and we are probably in the sixth inning of the process. We have another candidate or more, then we will move forward into the decision-making phase. We will eventually catch him up to our process and our plans and get his input as well as we move forward."

One caller inquired what type of attributes Epstein is looking for in a manager.

"In the real world, it's hard to find a candidate that has everything you're looking for," Epstein said. "What you do is you weigh your variables and make your sacrifices where you have to. Often times, if you're going to take a candidate without previous managerial experience, even at the minor league level, he has to represent real upside in other areas. In that case, you have to do even more due diligence than you normally would because you're projecting him into that role."

In the Francona vs. Maddux case. I honestly don't know much about either. Only that Maddux is a great pitching coach, and Maddux had a great sense of humor. A Manager in some ways becomes the face of the orginazations. Because he's the one that appears in video clips every almost every single game. I favor Maddux over Francona in that regard too because I'd kinda like some new blood to be that face of the Cubs. If Francona came over it would just be too much of a Red Sox overload.

I think just based on his media appearance so far, Maddux would be a great new face for the Cubs. He's pitching coach record is just another interesting bonus. Too many reasons to like Maddux. He's been my #1 choice ever since hearing his name, seeing his funny side just strengthens my broner for him.

Probably that season ticket holder conference call today. Someone on here mentioned it earlier.

All of us have a lot of faith in Theo, but I'm tired of everybody acting like Theo has never made a mistake in his life. Theo has an amazing record, but he's not perfect (as his critics in Boston like to point out).

All the creepy fapping aside, who and when is the next interview candidate? I'm hoping we have someone managing the Cubs by next week.

Alomar is interviewing today. Theo said in a conference call this process is in the 6th inning yesterday. With next week being the GM meetings, I don't know whether or not that'd be the time announce a new guy or not.

I'm actually starting to lean towards Francona as my preferred choice as well. This isn't Boston brought back together again - it's a brand new dynamic and everyone understands that Theo is in charge, and Francona has shown a capability to blend in young talent. I'm not a big believer that teams necessarily need a Lou Piniella, in-his-prime, demonstrative type of GM, and I think Francona and Epstein would both be overly aware in regards to concerns about the clubhouse, due to how they finished in Boston.

That said, all the guys sound like good candidates, in all honesty. I liked Maddux's media clips from the other day, and I'm sure Mackanin/Sveum were fine (never looked at it). I'm sure Sandy Alomar Jr. would be great.

Trusting his processes does not = thinking he is infallible.

They won two titles with Tito. If Theo wants to go down the same road again, I don't think we should question it.

Lots of managers I wouldn't want have won titles.

Ozzie.

I'm kind of done with paying managers 4-5 million a year to manage. I'm content with giving Maddux a shot.

Yeah, i would rather not spend much of the budget on the manager. I don't want one of the highest paid coaching staffs.

I'm not sure how cheaply we are going to be able to get Maddux, though I'm sure it will be less than 4-5M.

It better be cheap. 1-2 million?

Flying a bunch of candidates in, making them go through a bunch of hoops and tests, and then hiring Francona without an interview? That'd probably leave a bad taste in some people's mouths. It's kind of a jerk move, and I hope Epstein doesn't do it.
