what an awkward distance for a kiss

It's the same distance when they make love.

it took me at least 15 seconds to get this. time well spent

Any time spent thinking about Theo is time well spent.

Thank God we have a guy running the team that I believe in and whatever he decides to do I trust. I don't have to worry about the Cubs doing really stupid lasting mistakes. That's not to say I think Theo is perfect. If he thinks signing Pujols or Fielder is the right move I'll get behind it.

Fielder is not the type of player you want to try to build a team around. Pujols is aging. My opinion, we'll see.

So your opinion is that there are like 6 guys you build a team around. If the Cubs don't sign Fielder or Pujols this offseason they're putting themselves in a gaping hole for 2012 and 2013. AND NO IT WON'T TAKE 15 YEARS TO TURN AROUND A TEAM WITH a 30M PAYROLL ADVANTAGE AND 1 LONG TERM CONTRACT ON THE BOOKS FOR 2013

This.

Theo won't be perfect. I'm sure he'll have some mistakes along the way, but I'm thrilled the Cubs finally have great leadership at the very top of the organization and will change the organizational philosophy to something that will lead to a consistent contender. Thank God I don't have to spend any more time wondering what our dumbass (former) GM's philosophy will be this offseason.

However, I couldn't disagree with you more about Fielder or Pujols. The Cubs need a big bat in the lineup, and who better than either of those guys? I think if I had my choice I'd probably choose Fielder only because he's younger, but if we sign Pujols I would be thrilled. However, in Theo I trust.

By the way, Kaplan was at his [expletive] worst at the end when Rogers and Van Dyck indicated they expected Soriano to be back and Phil thought Z would be. He was like, "If Mike Quade, Soriano, and Zambrano are still on this team next year, I'm not going to be happy."

I may be remembering that a bit wrong but that was the gist.

They all seemed incredibly annoyed at him.

Like Theo [expletive] Epstein cares if that tool is happy.

Even during the Epstein interview, Kaplan couldn't help himself and kept dropping Z, Soriano, and Ramirez as examples of the Cubs problems and who needs to be accountable for them.

Thank God most people know what a tool Kaplan is otherwise his idiotic biases might actually gain some traction.

It's funny how most of the CSN guys and the beat guys who go on the show seem to think he's a douche, especially Boyle, yet he's still employed there.

For what it's worth in regard to the whole Pujols-Fielder discussion:

In the PTI interview, one of the questions was asking what Theo thought as an outsider looking at the Cubs in the 2011 season. One of the first things he said was the absence of a core of elite talent. (It might have been THE first thing he said, I don't remember.) He compared it to having guys like Manny and Ortiz mashing for the Sox in their prime.

He also repeated the part of the press conference where he talked about building a winner "the right way," and making sure that any success they see isn't followed by years of obscurity and that the success is maintained and long-term.

As far as indications on whether or not he'll make a run at Fiel-jols, it's pretty mixed, but it definitely gives me confidence in the reasoning behind either way he could go. Personally, I think he'll throw his hat in the ring, but that he won't be afraid to walk away if the price isn't right. And I don't think he'd be wrong to do so.

of [expletive] course kaplan's first question is what to do about [mexicans] that don't run out ground balls. EASILY this team's biggest problem, for sure.

Supposedly Gammons was on NESN earlier this afternoon and said that he expects Theo to make a run at Pujols or Fielder. We know Gammons and Epstein are buds, so there could be some traction to this. Edited by Hollandsworth's mug

I think his comments about being interested in players who are entering their prime/in their prime was pretty telling that Pujols won't be on our radar. It did, however, give me some mild optimism that we would make a run at Prince.

Of course, that's probably just a total reach by me.

I don't see how Epstein's comments about wanting players in their prime rules Pujols out. He could easily be in favor of making an exception for one of the best players of all time, whose non-prime years could be better than plenty of good players prime years.

Does Theo have precedence said where he has indicated interest towards specific players. I could easily see him no wanting to show his hand.

I think Theo is going to be cautious of who he throws around big money to given how his tenure in Boston ended. He might decide to ignore the guidelines he just gave us today for a player like Pujols. And it wouldn't be a bad thing at all. I mean its Albert Pujols. But I'm not sure he will do that or that Pujols will even want to come here unless 2-3 other FAs are coming our way. And that I am pretty sure is not going to happen.

Maybe. Every other report suggests he won't but most of those are speculation based on little clues here or there and not direct knowledge. I mean its pretty rare that there were be 2 premier players at one position available to sign in one offseason where the 2 biggest payrolls in baseball won't be involved. Maybe he will see this as a once in a decade opportunity to improve the team with an elite player though FA

I hope somebody asks Jed Hoyer at some point to expand on the Adrian Gonzalez trade. Rumor had it that the Cubs and Red Sox had offered approximately equal packages, but that Hoyer went with the Red Sox because he was more familiar with the guys in the system. I bet he's regretting that about now.

Are you saying we were players for Adrian Gonzalez? Maybe my memory alludes me or I blocked that painful memory out of my head, but I don't recall anything of the sort.

According to the Moneyball article in SI, we had made preliminary calls on AGON, but when Theo got involved, he pushed and pushed until Hoyer conceded and got it finalized before the winter meetings began. First time I had actually thought of Hendry as lazy, to be honest. Looks like he misread the situation, at the very least.

I think we need to be very careful with Pujols, the more I read. He's going to most likely give the Cards last shot and I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere yesterday that it'll take a sizable difference for him to leave the Cards to begin with. Think the analogy was 20 mill more overall wouldn't get him out of St. Louis.

If nothing else it wouldn't hurt to match the high offer, if only to artificially drive the price up for him and to make the Cardinals have to pay more.
