I've been hearing the Rangers will have some money to spend this off season too. Whether they use that to lock up Hamilton/Napoli, bring in pitching (or retain Wilson), or grab one of Pujols/Fielder is anyone's guess though.

Rumors have also indicated the Rangers are going to be pitcher crazy this offseason too. I think Wilson will be their top priority, though they could be a surprise suitor for either Pujols or Fielder.

The Yankees and Red Sox both have elite 1B that play good defense at 1B, so they don't look to be huge players. They've done creative things to add talent like that in the past, but when we're already at the bottom of the defensive spectrum it gets a bit tricky.

Neither team has shied away from doubling down with the 1B/DH type of hitter.

If CC hits the market he will be their #1 priority. He is exactly what Nolan Ryan wants in a pitcher.

Yeah, I really can't see where the Yankees or Red Sox ending up with one of the 1B. Especially if the Red Sox resign Big Pappi to be their DH. Yankees have Tiexiera and they have to reserve the DH spot for all their old former superstars.

Personally, I don't think Pujols is going to get the money he believes he's going to get and resigns with the Cards. If Boras goes Boras and signs his client to the biggest offer, Prince is going to be a National.

They've claimed they have no interest. That could be posturing, though. Or trying to avoid tampering.

True, and it wouldn't surprise me to see the Red Sox go hard after either one with Ortiz likely gone, but the Yankees...I don't know. They've got Tex at 1B and ARod seems destined for the DH spot sooner rather than later.

I don't think it was Murton. There was something in the trade that one of the GMs didn't realize he was agreeing to, and Hendry had to send him something later to make up for him not vetoing it at the deadline.

It was something with the Twins where I think they thought they were getting another player (Really? [expletive] you you got Justin Jones for Mienkietwicz) The Cubs signed Henry Blanco before the arb deadline so Minnesota could get a comp pick the next year.

There was a Twins incident, I think, with another organization where they traded for the wrong guy. Basically, two guys had similar names, and their scouts or someone gave the GM the wrong name.

The similar names was the White Sox. Traded for Jeff Barry(a 31 year old minor leaguer) rather than Jonathan Berry.

Another thing with their logjam is that it always seems one of the guys is on the DL anyway, so there isn't much bench time for the studs.

But I see them going hard after pitching.

Definitely.

Right, and I wouldn't discount them entirely, but allocating 45+ million to that area, especially when a good bit of value is kept in the defense of both players, would be a new situation for either team.

So on the day of a MLB imposed news blackout we hear news all day, but on an off-day we don't have anything yet? #-o

Kinda understandable that Kaplan and Levine are quiet, given they were pretty much eviscerated yesterday.

I heard the exact opposite, though that could be dependent on if Wilson resigns or not.

It's like 10AM. There's still plenty of time for the drama to begin.

My bet is that the Yankees off season will focus around re-signing CC and aquiring another front end starter through trade or FA.

The only way I would see the Red Sox doing it is if they were able to pawn off a big portion of Lackey and/or Crawfords contracts off on us in the compensation deal. With them, I think it would be limited to Fielder as a DH as I can't see Pujols or A Gon DHing or switching positions.

I like the lack of information. It suggests that things are actually getting done rather than various media goons re wording the same information or blatently contradicting each other.

There seems to be a resurgence of the fantasy that Theo can serve out the remainder of his contract as Red Sox GM and join the Cubs next year.

The Red Sox have taken such a major public relations hit over the fallout from their September collapse that they can’t afford to get taken on this deal. They could always hold Epstein to the last year on his contract.

A source close to Epstein said he is prepared for whatever the outcome is. If the sides can’t agree on compensation, he would return to Boston’s front office.

i finally gave in and joined twitter because it seems easier than refreshing nsbb 10,000 times per day at work. i keep waiting for the IT guys to come yell at me.

Yeah, the search is the key to twitter. Is your company that lacked down that you can't use twitter?

Mine is. No twitter, youtube or facebook here.

That sucks. Don't you work in IT?

Looks like both sides are leaking stuff to their shills to maintain/gain leverage, even perceived leverage.

If we're truly going to go into next year with the ability to spend a ton of cash, I'd rather have Pujols than Fielder. But, with the caveat of signing him to a shorter term deal than what anyone thinks is possible. Give him 4 years at 35 per or something like that. Include a couple of option years that are performance based at around 20 per on top of it. Make the entire value wind up at 6 for 180 or 7 for 200 max. Supposedly the Cards offered 9 for 195. He may see a deal like this much more enticing. But, we'd have to overpay obviously to get him to consider a shorter deal. But, I like this much more than having him on a 10 year deal or so where we're paying him 25 mill when he's 41 or 42 and he's a shell of what he was when we signed him.
