It's actually a brilliant plan by Ricketts on a monetary level. Sellouts will ensue, with or without adding any big name players. Saves a ton of cash in one way and still probably makes the same as if he signed a Pujols. And I'm not even complaining because if Theo is hired, I'm confident in however he's going to want to construct the roster and he wouldn't sign on without at least having the ability to make a splash if he really thinks it's best.

I can't imagine the animosity if he come's out after all this and says " Ive decided to stay in Boston because that's where my family is and my heart and roots are" or something of the sort. Just thinking about it now makes sick after all this thinking he's basically a lock to be GM now.

I wouldn't be too upset, in my mind this shows that Ricketts is serious about his search for a stats guy and what not. I believe that we get out of this with a good GM regardless of who it is.

I'd like to say that, but as far along as it is at this point, I'd be pretty pissed off. Not full of rage at Theo or anything, but just frustrated and disappointed.

The backup catcher has more impact on wins and losses than the manager does.

Mark Prior's arm would like a word with you.

And thousands of nsbb game threads.

I'm with rocket, and I'd be willing to bet most Boston fans already would like to find someone else. Think of how you'd feel if you knew your GM didn't want to be here anymore.

I'd be thinking: get lost then. Don't want you around.

Doesn't matter what the fans think. Owners already took him back once after he walked away.

Sure it does. Popular opinion always matters.

Fans are fickle and Boston fans are especially fickle but if he went back to Boston and they won again, which you would think they would, they'd get over it. That said, I'm with everyone else in thinking he is a Cub.

Listening to Boston Sports Talk after their collapse, a huge percentage of vocal fans wanted him gone before this. An even larger section were indifferent if he stayed or went. They believe Cherrington is more than capable of filling Theo's role.

Uhhh. He got them 6 playoff appearances and 2 World Championships after an 86 year drought, and never dared to fall below .500 in the tougest division in baseball. I'd be thinking: thanks for the memories,

True, but that would be many months down the road before he'd be able to establish that they're winners again. Right now he's the captain of a sunk ship, in their eyes. It's not a real good situation, which is one of the reasons he's looking in the first place.

You're right, of course, but getting to that point would be a long road, and it might be just as easy, if not easier, to just start over in another great sports town. Like Chicago, for instance.

Me too, being a Cubs fan. I don't think that's the same lens through which Red Sox fans view things.

What is Epstein's history of giving jobs to minor leaguers? I want Jackson to be our every day CF next season.

It isn't his decision to make, but the Red Sox have been really good about giving their talented young players opportunities (Papelbon, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Buchholz, Lester, etc.). Hopefully he'll bring that mentality with him to the Cubs...assuming he signs.

Yep. I think the big announcement is coming tomorrow. Hopefully morning time. And I think it's going to be Epstein to the Cubs.

I'm taking the Olney track -- he's been saying his feeling is that Theo is jumping ship for a few days now...

Have these two threads reached more posts and views then the entire second half of game threads from the past 2001 season? :-s

Yes, because NSBB didn't exist back then.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Epstein pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

You *always* hit Baskin Robbins after a big win.

This deal's in the bag folks.

Do they still have Gold Medal Ribbon? That's some of the best ice cream ever.

Cripes, the announcement can't come soon enough...
