Can people also please stop talking about taking on Lackey's contract like that is a realistic possibility. He is still owed somewhere around $50 million. The Cubs are not taking on a bad $50 million contract to hire a gm. If they get Theo, I expect the compensation to Boston will be mostly insignificant, either lesser prospects or Ricketts will write them a check as a courtesy.

If the Yankees lose tonight, which I probably just jinxed, will we get a couple of weeks of Cashman talk and speculation? I'm bored of this Epstein stuff.

I just don't see any real reason for Epstein to leave Boston right now...Even if you want to think he's willing to relocate his young family, that he needs new challenges, and that he wants desperately to be a baseball legend who took both major "cursed" franchises and turned them around...why the heckaroo would he leave Boston immediately after a team he's very responsible for just collapsed like that? That's straight up embarrassing, and to run from it from it right after? It makes me not want to buy the hype. I might even go as far as saying I PREFER Cherington, but I won't.

We wouldnt have got to this point without a decent amount of interest shown by Theo. So yeah its a realistic possibility.

So your theory is that Epstein has no interest in coming to the Cubs, but yet it didn't occur to him to tell someone and put an end to this circus.

I'm amazed that nothing has leaked as yet. I can't imagine the Red Sox owner and President will go onto a radio show tomorrow morning and not address this situation, and the fact that we have no indication of what they will say is remarkable.

The point we're at is asking permission to talk. Everything about him being interested is from "sources." To me this is similar to Boston's flirtations with Beane almost a decade ago. It's just giving fans the image for the archetype they're looking for...IMPHO...

To me this is similar to Boston's flirtations with Beane almost a decade ago. It's just giving fans the image for the archetype they're looking for...IMPotheadO...or a "hey we tried for the top guy" kind of thing...Epstein's still fairly young as a GM as it is, so getting out of Boston later is very doable for him. If I were him I'd be really into the idea of tweaking the Red Sox roster right now and getting it right.

So Theo is just sitting back watching this thing unfold knowing that he has no interest in interviewing for the Cubs GM position? John Henry has been debating whether to grant the Cubs an interview for the last 2 days and he never bothered to ask Theo about his interest? C'mon that's just not logical. There is obviously interest from Theo in the position. To what extent we don't know yet.

And I'm not sure what you are talking about with Beane. He actually accepted the Red Sox offer and flew back to California to tell his employers and clean out his office when he had a change of heart.

I wonder how much has gone on behind the scenes that we'll never be privy to? I think we'll hear tomorrow whether or not the Cubs are allowed to speak to him. But I think there's at least the same chance that Henry comes on the air in the morning and announces Theo has been given a new title and a healthy bump in pay. Part of me thinks this is still just leverage being used by Theo to get what he really wants. But, if the Cubs get a shot with him, my guess is this thing gets done extremely quickly. It's pretty obvious how much Ricketts wants him, so we won't be messing around if we get a shot. But, Boston knows this as well, so my guess is they're doing or have already done, everything in their powers to keep him in their fold.

If I were Theo, I'd be more concerned that my friends are telling Peter Gammons that

I feel like I'm trapped in an elevator;

my family has been threatened by nuts;

I have a police cruiser posted outside my residence, presumably to safeguard my family; and

I can't take my wife out to dinner in public

than concerned about tweaking the Red Sox roster.

No, he's being pissed his team crapped the bed. What's not logical about not adding interest that he hasn't directly stated he has?

Note: Beane backed out almost immediately. He thought better of it. During that time his A's teams were still top notch but looking to get over the hump. Epstein's got a very expensive wtf just happened on his resume, and he's going to leave that as his last Red Sox team? I'll believe that when I see it.

I realize Boston fans are knocking him right now, but that's just what sport fans do. As much as we'll really like new GM, there will be wth are you doing or wtf just happened moments.

Trying to divine all the behind the scenes activity is probably a losing battle.

I'm looking forward to the resolution. It's pretty hard to figure out all the conversations, dealings, etc.

If Epstein is coming to Chicago, I'd like it to be settled fairly quicky. Let's not have this thing drag on into the Christmas Holidays, please. Get it done, or axe it, please.

It'll drag on a couple days past the World Series at most.

Oh boy, this has got me excited. Just now from the Boston Herald:

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?&articleid=1371616&format=&page=1&listingType=sox#articleFull

Theo Epstein resolution draws near

there were signs out of Fenway Park yesterday that all sides were working cooperatively and without rancor toward a solution

"There’s no question the Cubs job holds some allure for Epstein. Those closest to him believe he’ll take the job, if it’s offered, though it’s by no means a sure thing.

The long wait for any word out of Red Sox owner John Henry will end today.

Henry will be a guest on the Dennis and Callahan Show on WEEI from 8-9 this morning, with Herald columnist Gerry Callahan and co-host John Dennis questioning him on everything from the circumstances that led to Francona’s departure to the future of Epstein.

So, can we now start up the Cashman to the Cubs rumors since the Yankees just got bounced from the playoffs?

Cashman's uncle's friends think he'd welcome the idea of talking about taking on the challenge of righting the Cubs.

Someone that is able to listen to the interview, please recap the important bits here. Pretty sure it'll be blocked for me at work, since most streaming radio is.

I'm at work in the bowels of a school in Iowa listening to a Boston radio station trying to get info about the Cubs..what's wrong with me

If Hendry were still the Cubs' GM, can you imagine Tom Ricketts and Crane Kenney having this kind of seasonal post-mortem on the radio without Hendry? I really can't. I know the Sox are different, and I know that there are other non-Cubs-related reasons he could be unavailable, but it seems pretty telling that Epstein isn't with them.
