Francona said that he and general manager Theo Epstein “butted heads sometimes,” but he suggested that was the natural byproduct of a mutually respectful job dynamic in which both parties were comfortable expressing their opinions. He declined to speculate on whether he would work for Epstein again (potentially in another organization).

“He’s got his things to take care of this week I know,” Francona said, referring to the Cubs’ expressed desire to speak to Epstein. “That’s his business. He knows the respect I have for him.”

Hopefully that's a good sign he's very interested.

Theo will not make his decision until this thread passes the Brian Roberts thread in length. Only about 270 more pages to go. Lets do it!

Doing my part.

Ricketts needs to stop this right now. I know it's your family's new shiney toy and you want to play with it. Keep your hands off it. Hire the best GM and let him bring on his own hires. I've read that part of problem in Boston is a meddling ownership which wanted to make personnel decisions. We already have the makings of that here.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

The 'Friends of Tom' faction will be showing up soon.

No, Crane is too busy trying to swindle the local orphanage out of the funds they'd saved up for their annual christmas party.

Bruce Levine was just on with Waddle and Silvy and said that John Henry will be on WEEsomething (Sorry, guys, I have to find out the exact station) at 7AM Chicago time tomorrow morning to disuss where the organization is headed. This willl obviously shed some light as to Esptein.

Additionally, a caller asked Bruce about the likelyhood that the Cubs go after Pujols or Fielder and Levine replied:" There is no way either one of them will want to come here".

Cub fans can only pray that Ricketts is the same sort of Fanboy Owner as, say, Mark Cuban or Jerry Jones.

Well that settles that then. Better lock up Carlos Pena.

Nonsense. I hate when they answer a question like that with what amounts to their own opinion.

He said that while Chicago is a great place to play, these guys want to win and are not going to want to wait around for any type of rebuilding process that could takes years.

Which is absurd. This team doesn't need a multi-year rebuilding process.

You're right. It doesn't. But that doesn't mean it won't happen.

Unless we sign a really great GM, then I retract.

"It appears the long wait for some word, any word, out of Red Sox owner John Henry will be ending tomorrow. Henry will be a guest of the Dennis and Callahan show on WEEI from 8 to 9 tomorrow morning, with Herald columnist Gerry Callahan and co-host John Dennis questioning him on everything from the circumstances that led to Terry Francona’s departure to the future of general manager Theo Epstein, whom the Cubs would like to speak to regarding their opening at general manager.

Henry has not responded to multiple interview requests from the Herald and other outlets, and barring a change of heart tonight, tomorrow’s radio appearance will mark the end of his silence.

Henry, incidentally, will be joined on the air by team president Larry Lucchino"

Me= Opens Jameson bottle tonight in anticipation of interview

If the Cubs offer the most money, they will play here.

If Pujols does test the FA waters and STL isnt offering enough, there will be 2 premier FA 1B available and the 2 usual suspects will be out of the running due to having premier 1B. So we're looking at the Cubs, Angels, maybe Dodgers, maybe Mets fighting for 2 guys. The Cubs are no further away from competing than any of those teams except the Angels.

Are there any darkhorses out there? Maybe Florida tries to make a splash with their new stadium opening, and anticipating extra revenue. Houston typically can spend money but I doubt they are in a situation were they'd be looking at a high end FA. San Francisco could use hitters all over the field, so they might be in. Seattle? I'm just grasping at straws here.

Until told otherwise, I intend to delude myself into believing that this radio interview will be a PR move to explain why they felt like they decided to let Theo go.

It's exciting that we are discussing Epstein. If it happens we should be thrilled.

But, I am still in the Andrew Friedman camp for a few reasons. One, I have this nagging feeling that Epstein would still have his heart elsewhere and would not be the GM here for 10 years. Maybe that is a good thing, but I'd like someone we won't constantly be worrying that he will be leaving when a better situation arises. I think Friedman would be someone who we can retain and will be the face of the Cubs long term. Second, I think there was a time in the early-mid 2000's that taking a smart statistical approach worked in part because there were still dinosaur teams to compete against. As teams like the Cubs get up to speed, the ability to hoodwink teams shrinks. If Friedman goes to Houston, we will have less chance to be special in a crappy division. Epstein won't leave Boston for anyone else (I still think it's slim he comes here), certainly not Houston. If we sign Friedman, there's a chance Houston stays behind. Third, Friedman has done it with a small budget and has out competed Epstein dollar for dollar. Why wouldn't I want the winner of that horse race instead of the second place guy?

If nothing else, it seems really unlikely that Lucchino is going anywhere, so the "give Epstein a promotion he won't get in Boston" angle remains.
