Henry could still simply decline to comment on the Theo situation, or say som random BS that doesn't really tell us anything new.

It's exciting that we are discussing Epstein. If it happens we should be thrilled.

But, I am still in the Andrew Friedman camp for a few reasons. One, I have this nagging feeling that Epstein would still have his heart elsewhere and would not be the GM here for 10 years. Maybe that is a good thing, but I'd like someone we won't constantly be worrying that he will be leaving when a better situation arises. I think Friedman would be someone who we can retain and will be the face of the Cubs long term. Second, I think there was a time in the early-mid 2000's that taking a smart statistical approach worked in part because there were still dinosaur teams to compete against. As teams like the Cubs get up to speed, the ability to hoodwink teams shrinks. If Friedman goes to Houston, we will have less chance to be special in a crappy division. Epstein won't leave Boston for anyone else (I still think it's slim he comes here), certainly not Houston. If we sign Friedman, there's a chance Houston stays behind. Third, Friedman has done it with a small budget and has out competed Epstein dollar for dollar. Why wouldn't I want the winner of that horse race instead of the second place guy?

Heres what he said regarding Friedman just now

Bruce Levine

(2:23 PM)

Friedman has ownership in the Rays. I'm told that the only job he would leave for is the Houston job. Why Houston? He's from there and his father is trying to put a group together to purchase the team. Otherwise the consensus is that Friedman is staying in Tampa.

Additionally, a caller asked Bruce about the likelyhood that the Cubs go after Pujols or Fielder and Levine replied:" There is no way either one of them will want to come here".

Well that settles that then. Better lock up Carlos Pena.

He said that while Chicago is a great place to play, these guys want to win and are not going to want to wait around for any type of rebuilding process that could takes years.

If the Cubs offer the most money, they will play here.

If Pujols does test the FA waters and STL isnt offering enough, there will be 2 premier FA 1B available and the 2 usual suspects will be out of the running due to having premier 1B. So we're looking at the Cubs, Angels, maybe Dodgers, maybe Mets fighting for 2 guys. The Cubs are no further away from competing than any of those teams except the Angels.

I have more money than the Dodgers and Mets.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Friedman does not have ownership in the Rays.

There have been other sources that have said that the Cubs job is the only one that would interest Friedman outside of Tampa. Personally though I think he is a longer shot than Theo is simply because of how close he is to the ownership group in Tampa.

Tampa had a press conference today, nothing much was really said

# Friedman says he hopes to add one or two relievers this offseason, as opposed to revamping it completely as he did last winter.

# The Rays could trade a starting pitcher for offense, but that's not necessarily the plan, according to Friedman.

# Friedman says the Rays "have the players in place to have a very successful 2012 season."

# Asked about his own future, Friedman said he's focused on building the best team possible for 2012.

And what Levine failed to mention (And I do think Levine is a pretty solid source) is that obviously if the Ricketts and the Cubs are going to target one of those two, we had better have a plan as to how we get back in the race NEXT YEAR.

Tom Ricketts: "Hi, Albert/Prince. We just, as you know, hired Theo Epstein (Or other solid GM) to be our new GM. Does this not speak volumes of our desire to win and win soon? Theo will be calling your agent shortly".

Then factor in a major media market, insane endorsement opps and what's not to like?

Sounds like we'd get in huge trouble for tampering.

Huh? How is that tampering?

What's to get excited about? You think they are going to announce anything on a sports radio show at 7AM? It's just a interview. Big whoop!

If they had nothing to say at a time like this, they wouldn't go on the radio. I have a hard time believing it's "just a(n) interview."

Our owner calling two players who are currently playing for other teams in the playoffs? Seems pretty clear.

It was a nit pick, regardless.

Not that this was some brilliant unprecedented plan he came up with, but I figured he meant once they were free agents.

And despite the belief I want Ryno to be the next manager, if Theo announced he's coming here and bringing Francona with him, I might cry happy tears.

That said, I do not want all of this to come crashing down by finding out Epstein is staying. Huge disappointment if that happens.

Also, who says, "Big whoop!?"

Believe me, I 100% knew this was coming.

The micks just want to hear how Henry and Lucchino's familes are doing.

Does it mean anything that Theo isn't going to join them tomorrow? Typically wouldn't the GM join them and chime in on what direction they're going to take?
