Typical Hendry again going on like there's no problem, stress, urgency or anything

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0630-cubs-giants-chicago--20110629,0,7314531.story

What's he supposed to do run around his office screaming "ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod?"

Lol, first comment on the article:

They need to fire Hendry and give Steve Stone whatever he wants in order to accept the position. If anybody can fix this sinking ship, it's Stoney.

ETA: and for good measure, here's the third:

Jim Hendry is the guy who sold the reigning AL MVP for $75k. Wow. Milton Bradley. Wow. No one else in baseball would have given Soriano that contract. Shall we go on? For the money he has spent, he has accomplished less with more than any GM in baseball history.

Hendry wants to keep the guys who can help him in 2012. What's wrong with that?

Two things:

He's a horrible judge of talent who has no idea who can and cannot help him in 2012.

He shouldn't be here in 2012.

So basically, Hendry should just sit and wait to be fired, or resign I guess.

To be fair, it wouldn't be good for Hendry's negotiating position to come out publicly and say that we're going to have a firesale and want to get rid of everyone.

He might be able to get some better prospects if he sells that he really wants to keep the team intact.

GM Jim Hendry says there won’t be a fire sale, but the Cubs are “open for business,” Olney reports. Jeff Baker and Kerry Wood are “among the most coveted players in the trade market,” since they’re cheap and useful. Rival executives have mixed opinions about Carlos Pena, who is powerful but streaky.

Wood is near the top of Arizona’s list of targets.

Didn't Wood sign cheap as a hometown discount and he wants to be a Cub for the rest of his career? I feel like most of the stuff I read paints Wood as a goner because he signed cheap and teams will want him without taking into account his loyalty in Chicago.

Posted
But Wood only signed a 1-year deal, right? He could go play for a contender for a couple of months and then sign another 1-year deal with the Cubs next season.
Posted
I can understand if he didnt want to relocate for a fringe contender like Arizona, but if someone like the Phillies, Yankees, or Red Sox were interested, I cant imagine him objecting, and God knows the Phils could use some help in the pen.

During an appearance on the "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago on Thursday, Kerry Wood indicated that he would prefer to stay with the Cubs past the trade deadline.

"At this point, it's here or nowhere," said Wood. "I don't have a desire to go travel around the country any more and do all that and be away from the family." Wood, 34, is making just $1.5 million guaranteed this season, but he does have a full no-trade clause in his contract. He won't leave unless it's the perfect situation.

From Bruce Miles:

“I think it would have to be great for both,” he said, referring to himself and the Cubs. “Obviously, Sarah and I will talk about it. We have a little bit. It would have to be ideal for both. It would have to be something that is definitely going to help this organization down the road and something that’s going to fit for us, which is, right now, here. I know the talk’s going to come. I’ve already been hearing it. So we can address it now. I doubt it. We’re committed here. We’ve got an event in September. So I’ll just leave it at that. I don’t see it. I don’t see it happening.”

I wonder if there'd be a stink raised if Kerry got traded and immediately re-signed with the Cubs for way under market value. I vaguely remember San Fran making a big deal about Ponson signing with Baltimore the year after they traded him away, insinuating there was a backroom deal in place.

Considering the deal he signed this past offseason to be a Cub, I don't think anyone would be shocked if he did the same thing this coming offseason, regardless of whether he finishes 2011 as a Cub or not. I don't think it's any secret to anyone that Wood wants to always be affiliated with the Cubs in some fashion.

I think this is definitely the case, why show your hand before someone calls? it still irks me that he is here and if we had the players to really go fire sale Im not sure I would trust his judgement. Realistically though with the contracts we have and the tradable players on this team we are talking about a rather mundane return. I really dont expect any major difference makers coming our way.

I don't think anyone really expects to get difference makers at this year's deadline. Realistically, we can hope to get a return of decent prospects who can perhaps contribute in the future or be part of another trade package later on.

That is unless Hendry decides to trade Marmol or Soto.

Posted
Since when did Soto become an untouchable? He's been pretty damn lousy.

Others have pointed out that this isn't true, but when you're calling him lousy, who are you comparing him to?

For me, it's the eye test. He just looks terrilble at the plate. That said, there is not a lot out there. All I am saying is if Geo gets you a fantastic haul, you'd have to consider it.

I think Soto is pretty solid. That's not so much an eye test for me as it is a gut feeling, which I tend to trust more. If I were going off of instinct instead of gut feeling, I would still say Soto is solid, but I wouldn't trust my instincts as much as I trust my gut feeling. I tend to trust my gut over my instincts.

I don't know if that was sarcasm...but gut vs. instincts?? Really?

Gut vs instincts vs the eye test. Don't forget the eye test.

The smell test is being unfairly overlooked.

This is actully a very good year to be a seller. Virtually every contender has their share of holes, and we NEED to cash in our expiring contracts. I really hope Wood agrees to be traded, as solid relievers are always at a premium this time of year. Besides, if this really is the end of his career, wouldn't he rather go out a winner instead of this mess? Its only 3 months, and its not he has to leave Chicago forever. Aramis Ramirez is probably the biggest thing the brass needs to discuss. I really want him back next year, but if he's not in the plans, they need to cash him in. A lot of teams would love to get their hands on him, especially the one with a bottomless pit of money who just lost their megastar 3B for 4-6 weeks and a hole at DH.

What do people expect Hendry to say? The cubs will be very active up until the deadline and will place a few players on waives who are not trade (Soriano, maybe Z). The cubs will have ridiculous amounts of money available next year and have some great pieces to build around (Marshall, Castro, Garza, Marmol(i still would trade high), Soto.

My approach would be:

Push hard to trade Soriano, Grabow

Trade Byrd

Trade Pena

Trade Ramirez IF it brings back 2 good/great prospects or a solid starter, if not do not trade him and work out a 2yr deal.

Trade Wood if he approves and is willing to return after the season.

Trade Marmol, he is worth a ton right now and could be the biggest trade chip the Cubs have.

Trade Baker, Johnson and high upside prospect

Trade Dempster

In the offseason

Fire Quade

Set up to Make a run at Fielder

Keep an eye on the Dodgers if players become available use prospects to go after Kemp or Ethier

Keep an eye on the Garza type pitchers available, also keep an eye on CC's opt out deal.

find a more powerful productive 2B, example: Kelly Johnson type player.

Resign RJ as 4th/5th OF

tough to project what or who will be available.

Unless we need the money, or get a great offer, I'm in no rush to trade Byrd or Dempster. Also, between Barney, DJ, Flaherty, Gonzalez, Baker, and DeWitt, I see no urgency to sign a 2B and let those guys fight it out during ST.
