He reported on espn 1000 just now that Hendry and his scouts will meet Monday and decide who to move and who to keep. It is basically a whatever we need to do to get better we will do meeting. Speculation about Geo and Pena's futures were mentioned.

I can't see much in return for Pena at all.

Same for Soto. Would that mean it would be Hill and Castillo from here on out? Yuck.

You can't see getting much for a guy on pace to hit 30 HR who plays excellent defense and has a good OBP?

It's gonna take quite a haul for me to be happy losing Soto.

I think you have to trade Pena right now, if you can. And I think he'll command about what Soto would, factoring in team-controlledness and whatnot. And we should be getting more for Geo. So let's keep him, please.

He's 33. What do you see the return being?

He strikes out a ton and has a low average. That common for a power hitting like Pena but do you think teams will give up much for him?

He has a good OBP, can clobber the [expletive] out of the ball (and is), hits LH, plays excellent defense and is only signed through this year. That's going to be appealing to any team in the race that needs help at 1B or DH.

There's no reason to hold on to Pena, as much as I like rooting for him. His awful 2010 ensures he won't net you any draft compensation(not that you'd risk offering him arbitration anyway), and his production isn't so good that you need to keep his good will as a contingency. Carlos Pena is always going to be out there. Next year we might call him Lance Berkman, or Jorge Cantu, or Kendry Morales, or Michael Cuddyer, but guys who can put up 2-3 wins for 1 year aren't all that difficult to come by, so that contingency is there no matter what if you strike out on the Pujolses and Fielders of the world.

Yeah, but he has a low batting average and he's 33.

I think you have to wait for his numbers to start looking a lot more impressive, and then think long and hard about what you are going to do at 1B next year. The Cubs were never going to get Pujols, and the likelihood probably went down with the injury. But they need a 1B next year, regardless.

If you are just going to get another fringe prospect, there's really no point.

Pena should net a decent return. Soto (and Z) you don't trade unless someone knocks your socks off with a great package. Trading any of them for average prospects in the low-mid minors should get Hendery fired immediately.

Soriano I'd consider a bit differently, but he's really the only one in that situation.

I hear a lot of talk about what a great clubhouse guy and motivator that Pena is, and as good as that is, I really hope that doesn't deter them from trying to trade him.

As far as I'm concerned, this team has one untouchable player on the big league roster, and I don't think there's any question who that is.

Why were the Cubs never going to get Pujols? And how does the likelihood go down from never?

I just never thought there was a realistic chance they would get him. They could, sure, but they weren't going to.

I really think folks are missing the possibility that the Cubs may be angling to extend Pena.

Trading Soto right now would be completely idiotic.

I'm definitely down with trading Pena. However, I'd also look hard at bringing him back again next year if Pujols/Fielder aren't going to be options. I assume he's still not going to be in a position to demand a long-term deal, unless he goes crazy the rest of the season.

That'd be pretty stupid.
