Once Brett Jackson comes off the 7-day DL at Tennessee, the Cubs should seriously consider promoting him. Before the injury, Jackson was hitting .295 with an OBP of .420. Put him in CF and bat him leadoff.

That depends on how long Byrd will be on the shelf. If its the 15 day minumum, it wouldnt make sense to start Bretts clock for a 2 week stint. However, if Byrd will be out for an extensive period of time, it would be interesting to see them call him up.

You'd like to think Jackson's option clock won't be an issue.

Actually, you'd like to think that it would. If we're here in 3 years bemoaning the fact that we called up Brett Jackson a month too early and it's now going to cost us $10 million extra in arbitration, I'll be a pretty happy camper as that means BJax will be one heck of a player.

On the other hand, if he's going to be that good, why waste him on this crappy bunch so early (like we did with Castro last year). I would have rather delayed Starlin by a month and saved the arbitration money he'll get with a super 2, but whatever. The Cubs can afford it.

He won't become a super 2 from being on the major league roster for 15 days. The only way a short-term call up affects him is burning an option year. (Reference Corey Patterson - Debut in 2000, didn't hit arbitration til 2005.)

True, but why call him up if its for 2 weeks? Let's say Byrd is out a month or two and then by the time he's ready to come back, we've traded Kosuke and/or Pena. Then you have an outfield of Soriano, Jackson, and Byrd with Jeff Baker and Colvin splitting 1st base. And an entire fanbase hating the team. It's possible.

what does all the extra stuff have to do with Jackson? When Byrd's back, you send him to Iowa (unless he's terrible and needs to be back in AA). If he's hitting so well you want to keep him up here, you find some ABs for him somewhere.

Well, looks like we finally get something out of the 3rd overall pick from the 2000 draft.

Yeah, but looking back at that 1st round in 2000, aside from Baldelli(6), Utley(15) and Wainwright(29), its not like we missed out on much. Maybe if A Gon(1) had fallen a few spots, wed be looking at a different story.

That draft was basically a big pile of poop. Just like many MLB first rounds.

On the positive side, at least we can set the clock for 2019 and Josh Vitters coming back for a cup of coffee with the Cubs. I kid, I kid.

Missing out on Utley is the definition of missing out on much.

That's awesome. I love that this dude is finally going to play with the team that drafted him, even if he's already been in the bigs for other teams.

Aside from Utley? Yeah, maybe you can't criticize the choice, but they still missed out on mucho much.

As an aside, I still can't watch Teixeira bat without thinking of what should have been. Oh how I long for an impact college bat.

That I know. What Im saying is there were 12 teams that ended up with duds between A Gon and Utley, not counting Baldelli as a dud, and then another 14 that ended up with duds between Utley and Wainwright.

They missed out on Matt Harrington, he would have never signed and the Cubs could have saved some money :)

Great story from Len last night about Montanez getting a hit in the ML 3 months before he got called up.

I could only hear part of this story. Anyone mind telling me how this happened?

He got called up by the Orioles in early August. Later in August the O's were playing a continued game (against the WS I think) from April and he got a hit in that game. The official box score of the game has the April date, so he got a hit at least 3 months before he was called up.

I think I remember that story. He probably told it last year when it happened.
