Sorry I didn't post a link, Bruce Miles tweet. Not official, likely though as Berg is in Boston.

I understand them wanting an extra reliever, even a bad one with tonight being a bullpen game, but hopefully a real player gets called up tomorrow. Any chance that Brett is close enough to returning that it could be him? Otherwise, Colvin is a likely option, especially with the chance for more PT.

What better way to replace one of your more consistant hitters than with a crappy relief pitcher.

Too bad Brett Jackson is still hurt. This could have been his time.

With Russel starting tonight and basically going with the entire bullpen for tonights game, and the offday tomorrow, an extra pitcher is more valuable today than a reserve bat that probably just sits on the bench. Id suspect come Tuesday Berg to go back down and a position player be added.

Plus there's the DH tonight so no need to worry about double switches or pinch hitting for the pitcher.

The question is who the reserve bat will be. The only 2 on the 40 man roster not already on the team or hurt are Colvin and Perez. Bringing Colvin up now to sit on the bench defeats the stated purpose of having sent him down in the first place and Perez isn't much of a bat.

With Byrd on the DL, Colvin just may start. The options at that point would be Reed, Colvin and Campana and, hopefully, they'd go with Colvin. Or at least a platoon of Reed/Colvin (probably preferable, actually).

Is there any word if this will be a 7 day concussion DL stint or the standard 15 day?

They said he never lost consciousness, so I doubt it'd be the 7-day concussion DL, but maybe those reports were wrong.

Low-level concussions don't involve a loss of consciousness.

Ah, was not aware of that. Thanks.

Has it even been long enough yet where they can recall him? I know there is an injury exception to the minimum time before someone can be recalled but since Berg is technically replacing Byrd I don't think they would be able to use that.

Colvin was sent to Iowa on May 16, so it'll be another 4 days until he's in the minors long enough to be recalled. I'm not sure on the specifics of the exception, so I don't know if Berg's callup negates the use of the exception for Colvin or not.

I have to assume it would negate it. The transaction bringing up Colvin would be him replacing Berg.

Probably right. That would be the most logical thing.

If Baker joins Byrd on the DL, Colvin can replace him. Not sure who would replace Berg though. Marquez Smith seems like a possibility. Ryan Flaherty would be an interesting option as well. Hes played pretty much every position in AA but C and P. However, my money is once again on Bobby Scales, whose always my default guess. Hes one of those gritty white guys the Cubs love, minus the white part.I really hope its not Fernando Perez. Theres no excuse to have him and Campana on the same team.

Once Brett Jackson comes off the 7-day DL at Tennessee, the Cubs should seriously consider promoting him. Before the injury, Jackson was hitting .295 with an OBP of .420. Put him in CF and bat him leadoff.

That depends on how long Byrd will be on the shelf. If its the 15 day minumum, it wouldnt make sense to start Bretts clock for a 2 week stint. However, if Byrd will be out for an extensive period of time, it would be interesting to see them call him up.

You'd like to think Jackson's option clock won't be an issue.

Actually, you'd like to think that it would. If we're here in 3 years bemoaning the fact that we called up Brett Jackson a month too early and it's now going to cost us $10 million extra in arbitration, I'll be a pretty happy camper as that means BJax will be one heck of a player.

On the other hand, if he's going to be that good, why waste him on this crappy bunch so early (like we did with Castro last year). I would have rather delayed Starlin by a month and saved the arbitration money he'll get with a super 2, but whatever. The Cubs can afford it.
