The problem is that even WITH instant replay, the crew chief would have had to call for it. I don't like the idea of an instant replay system that relies on the umps to self-govern (god forbid they admit they might have gotten a call wrong)

The managers should have 1 or 2 challenges per game before it falls to the umpires. Baseball NEEDS replay, and better accountability for its officials.

I wonder if Jake has trashed his living room over that call. lol

i can't see any conclusive proof that the catcher actually applied the tag. and the umpire had the best angle on it.

It sure looks like it here

I don't see much from that picture either that says either way as it looks like the glove may be in front of the runner's leg creating the illusion that it is touching. I do think it's too conclusive either and if they go with the "it must be conclusive" thing that other sports with replay use than I don't think the call would be overturned.

If he didn't tag him, he was damn close, and the ball beat the runner by 5 feet. 99 times out of 100, that's a no-brainer call. In the 19th inning, the ump said "[expletive] it, I'm late for the bar"

the best part of that replay is Proctor's swan dive out of the box

If the ump had correctly called Lugo out, I'm not sure that the Pirates couldn't have turned a double play getting Proctor at first.

don't we always bitch about umpires making those "in the neighborhood" calls?

If he had been called out, I don't think anyone would have questioned the call.

They would've, Proctor faceplanted coming out of the box.

I agree with this.

I agree with this.

Lugo certainly acted like he was out.

he probably was out. but the replay doesn't show it clearly, and from the ump's perspective it probably looked like he whiffed on the tag.

it's a borderline bad call, and certainly not even close to the worst blown call we've ever seen.

Santana with a no-no through eight. MLBN showing game live.

Also on ESPN. He allowed a run in the first inning on an error, stolen base, groundout and wild pitch.

EDIT: The only other baserunner was a walk in the eighth.

It was the 11th time since 1919 that a pitcher threw a no-hitter that wasn't a shutout. In 3 of the other ten, the pitcher also took the loss.

LOL at the 8th inning of this game.

4 runs score without a hit after 2 outs, no one on base. I remember watching this game with my Sox fan uncle and his head almost exploded out of laughter because he hated the Yankees (even though that was in the glorious stretch of the Yankees sucking for 15 years).

No hitters definitely seem less cool when the pitcher manages to give up a run, even if its completely unearned. Also is much less cool when its a combined no hitter.
