If it's 5/8/10 then I'm not going to be very happy. If it's 7/8/8 I'll be okay with it, but not nearly as happy as a 3/18 deal would've made me.

My guess is that this year would easily be the lowest of the 3. Hell, I could see them getting away with 4 for this year. Just to keep payroll at whatever limit they had set, since next year they're losing alot of cash off the books.

Done deal.

MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs and closer Carlos Marmol avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a three-year contract on Monday, according to a major league source.

The deal is believed to be in the $20 million range. The Cubs will make an official announcement later Monday.

Marmol's arbitration hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.

Marmol made $2.25 million in 2010, his first year of arbitration. He set a record for strikeouts by a Cubs reliever last season with 138. He also posted 38 saves and a 2.55 ERA.

General manager Jim Hendry and Marmol's agent Barry Praver were both confident Sunday morning that a deal would get done after meeting at Hendry's office at Fitch Park.

Wittenmeyer tweeted that he was hearing 3/20 too. 6/6/8 Would fall under the "okay" range for me.

If he doesn't get hurt, his arb years would probably go 5ish and 9 or so for the final year. Then, his 1st FA year would probably net him 11ish or so per year, maybe slightly more than that even. 3/20 no matter how it's broken down is solid value and worth doing, if you're the Cubs. It's saving close to 5-6 mill if you went year to year with him.

What you hope now is you see him pitch great, then you let him walk and collect the picks when the time comes.

3.2 this year, 7m next, 9.8 3rd year. Limited no trade.

3.2 this year? I know it's tight, but the injury hedge has to be a worthwhile investment. Hopefully his arm is young enough from catching that he doesn't go boom until 2014.

Wow. They're REALLY trying to save as much as possible off the roster's salary for this year. I really hope it's heading into the system.

It's also not a terrible idea with the economy coming back. I'm sure the Ricketts know what they're doing investing wise and the time value of money says that paying less up front isn't exactly a bad thing if you can make up that money with your investments.

That being said, almost $10 million in the 3rd year could be disastrous if Carlos gets injured.

Yeah, but it's also very smart, considering Dempster and Z will be off the books by then as well as everyone coming off the books after 2011. Soriano will be the lone longterm deal we've got on our books at that point. Making it much easier to allow a slightly backloaded deal for Marmol. Especially since it's his 1st FA year and he'd be making more than that anyway.(assuming he's close to the same pitcher he is right now)

why does hendry love backloading contracts so much. I realize that in this case its probably supposed to mimic what he'd get in arby, but yeesh.

Anyone have an idea how insurance works on something like this? Hypothetically speaking if you have 100% coverage in case of injury, and Marmol goes bust in spring training 2013, does the 9.8M get covered, or is it the average value of the contract that's covered?

Only if they insure it. An insurance policy is going to be in the 6 to 7 figure range. It is likely the Cubs would assume the risk, or only have coverage for specific injuries.

Yeah, he really does love backloading contracts. But in this case, I don't mind, mostly because of all the other money coming off the books.

Horrible, should've traded him the to rays.

There goes money for Pujols to be sent into another guaranteed injury. Never ever sign relievers to contracts longer than 1 year.

Hendry needs to go.

Great - another NTC (limited as it may be). Money seems ok though.

This gives us all of 5 - and only 1 will mean anything after this season. Z has 10/5 rights anyway, Soriano will have 10/5 rights after this year and Kosuke and Shark's contracts are up after this year.

So currently on the team we have 2 players with full no trade protection who don't have 10/5 rights - Sori and Shark. Kosuke and Marmol now have limited no trade protection and Z has 10/5 rights. I don't see an issue with NTCs.

Exactly. And the INDUSTRY (and not just Hendry) give out NTC. If you draw a line in the sand on NTC then you aren't going to sign good players--especially good players to favorable deals (and this deal is VERY favorable).

Hendry just locked up one of Marmol's free agent years for less than what he could have gotten in arb his final year and his second year is well south of what he could have gotten in arb too (Papelbon got 21.35M for his last two years of arb alone). The team could (and should) insure years 2-3. A very good deal.
