MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs and closer Carlos Marmol avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a three-year contract on Monday, according to a major league source.

 

The deal is believed to be in the $20 million range. The Cubs will make an official announcement later Monday.

 

Marmol's arbitration hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.

 

Marmol made $2.25 million in 2010, his first year of arbitration. He set a record for strikeouts by a Cubs reliever last season with 138. He also posted 38 saves and a 2.55 ERA.

 

General manager Jim Hendry and Marmol's agent Barry Praver were both confident Sunday morning that a deal would get done after meeting at Hendry's office at Fitch Park.
