I was in favor of trying to get him on a 3-4 year discounted deal, but I think I've come around to either going year to year with him or just a 2 year deal. I do think it makes sense to have a little doubt about his future health.

I'm thinking that if you don't trust Marmol's health (and I don't), then trading him makes even more sense than 1- or 2-year deals.

If the guy blows out his elbow, then the Cubs are still left holding the bag... just not as heavy a bag.

I think that depends on how competitive you see the team being this season.

I'd certainly go 1-2 year deals at this point and would heavily consider trading him at the break if we're out of the race.

His value is likely at an all time high right now, with no health concerns. We're always advocating on this board for the Cubs to sell high. Perhaps now is the time to do that. Who in the organization can handle the closer role if the Cubs could land a good haul for Carlos?

Kerry Wood could certainly step back into the role, but doing so would probably move Cashner back into the bullpen, wouldn't it? I'd be much more happy if we hung on to Marmol at least for this season. We're planning on contending, and the bullpen should be one of our main strengths. We should keep it that way, at least until we're out of contention.

When did Eric Gagne fall apart? 28/29? Billy Koch was around that age.

Koch didn't really have a true breakdown point. He was terribly inconsistent his entire career. His numbers were terrible in 2003, but then he rebounded and was much better (though still not good) in 2004. His K/9 also went up dramatically from 2003 to 2004. He was done after his age 30 season, though.

Gagne only logged 15 innings his age 29 and 30 years, but then was good in 2007 before falling apart in 2008.

Gagne's breakdown was steriod-related, wasn't it?

That was the hot rumor.

It won't happen, but I'd be fine with moving Marshall into the role. Wood would probably be better, though, so we could use Marshall as a fireman.

Carlos Marmol took a physical Saturday and his long-term contract should be finalized soon.

The details of the deal have yet to be revealed. Marmol is in his second year of arbitration, so he'll at minimum be buying out those last two years. The closer is coming off a fantastic season that saw him save 38 games while posting a 2.55 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and record-breaking 15.99 K/9 rate.

FEBRUARY 13TH: Marmol's agent, Barry Praver, arrived at Fitch Park in Arizona today to finalize a multiyear deal for the closer, tweets Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. The contract extension is expected to be announced Monday, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times (via Twitter).

Yes, that isn't too bad. I thought I read something yesterday at about the 3/25 range. I was pretty pissed after reading that blurb.

According to David Schuster, the deal is most likely in the range of 2-3 years at approximately $6M per year.

Wow, that's pretty damn good.

Yeah, I'll be very happy if that's true.

If you look at it like he'd get close to 5 this offseason, then probably 8-9 next year, if he has a decent season in 2012, that'd leave 2013 as his first true FA year and he'd command over 10 mill per for sure. If he signs a 3 year deal for 18 mill or so, that's a tremendous bargain.

Aside from addressing the most difficult need the team has(a consistent all-star level performer to build around), Hendry has pretty much crushed it this offseason. Quade, no Sandberg, Pena, Wood, Garza, Ramirez, Marshall, and now Marmol have all been varying degrees of good to great.

God, I hate this team.

If the report on what the contract will be is accurate, why would that be?

Because SweetZombieJesus is a hilarious caricature who tries to lampoon some imaginary NSBB-at-large with over the top sarcastic negativity. He's also not likely to be posting much longer if that's going to be the entirety of his contributions here.

Can't argue that at all. Didn't like the pricetag of prospects we gave up to get Garza would be my only issue, but even that was dealing from a position of strength inside the system, which is partly what it's needed for to begin with.

FEBRUARY 13TH: The deal is expected to be for three years and worth around $23MM, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

I was hoping no more than 7 a year. I guess it's not horrible. I just hate giving three-year contracts to relievers.

Provided the deal is in fact between $18-23 million over three years, that's decent. If it is anywhere above that, I guess that's what we've come to expect from Hendry vis a vis bullpen contracts.

I'll reserve judgement until I see what other items (NTC, performance based incentives, etc.) are included.

The delivery, arm angle and stress on his elbow/shoulder concern me but this sounds like a pretty good deal. His out pitch is as brutal on his body as it is to hitters so a long-term deal isn't wise. Two to three years is about right to me.

I think the difference between 18 and 23 is huge in this situation. I think 3/18 would be a bigtime bargain and a deal we should sign off on immediately. On the other hand, 3/23 isn't bad. It's definitely possible that it could be a bargain over going year to year with him over the same time period. On the other hand, I don't think it'e enough of a bargain to justify giving him 3 years at this point. An injury, wildness issues, loss of confidence, whatever......These things can and do happen to closers all the time. Carlos is elite, no question. But, he's also human and if one of those things happen to him, then this contract won't look all that great pretty quickly.

If it's 5/8/10 then I'm not going to be very happy. If it's 7/8/8 I'll be okay with it, but not nearly as happy as a 3/18 deal would've made me.
