The point is that it's a bit shocking and upsetting that (even without considering the full context) Kelly would try to rationalize the decision by using phrasing like "it was a beautiful day".

bingo. his whole behavior during this situation has been pathetic.

again, i'll ask: what's the point you're all after? What is it that a public apology, fine, and whatever settlement they reached with the family isn't satisfying for you, the masses with such strong concern for ND and the well being of its student film crew?

you don't think ND should have practiced outside? well, they did and they'll continue doing so as long as Kelly thinks the weather won't interfere with practice. they installed a new system to allow them to film practices without students being as high up in the air and without using scissor lifts as often or as high as they were needed before. the fact that other coaches did or didn't practice outside isn't really relevant.

they shouldn't have had Sullivan in the scissor lift that day. No one's arguing that. So what's the point?

i heard that they bought a series of pulleys and levers and peter pan zip-lines.

ok. the word "beautiful" set you off? fair enough.

a student that was also up on a lift said it was a "regular day" - a regular day? another student said "it was an ordinary day." bunch of jerks.

apparently most of the world and the people involved with the nd football program have separate definitions of ordinary days.

Michael Floyd arrested for DUI. No comments yet from Brian Kelly on if it was a beautiful day.

Apparently he was arrested for underage drinking in January, as well:

Trib[/url]"]But Floyd also has a Jan. 2010 arrest for underage drinking in Minneapolis on his record. As such, his chances to play in 2011 may rest in the hands of Notre Dame's student judiciary arm, the Office of Residence Life, which could issue a penalty as stiff as an expulsion that would cost Floyd his senior year.

........

Past precedent for Notre Dame players with two alcohol-related legal run-ins does not bode well for Floyd. Will Yeatman, a tight end and lacrosse player, left school and transferred to Maryland after a 2008 arrest for underage drinking and resisting arrest followed an operating while intoxicated arrest earlier that year.

Yeatman missed the 2008 lacrosse season after the first arrest and was suspended from the football team for the balance of his 2008 season following the second set of charges. He was eligible to return to the Irish football team the following spring, but that may not be an option Floyd can or even is willing to pursue.

he's allegedly had 3 alcohol related incidents (the January one was already known), has been suspended indefinitely, and is possibly facing jail time in MN for violating his probation. At least ND wasn't counting on him to be the best WR on the team and one of the best in the country...oh [expletive].

I hope he can get his act together, the kid has an unreal amount of talent but looks like he will end up more like Plaxico based on his decisions.

Between dead students, getting spanked by Navy, losing to Tulsa, ND's spectacularly pathetic exit from the NCAA tournament, and now this, it's been a heck of a last six months in South Bend.

that's dead student, andy. not students. the girl was from st mary's and the lineman wasn't even enrolled yet.

Heh. I defer to you on that. I hadn't even thought about Matt James in that list.

Some details from the Iowa rhabdomyolysis report have been released. It seems like the bulk of the blame is being placed on the coaching staff for poor communication with the parents after the hospitalization rather than from the workout itself.

I don't think there's a whole lot about this that isn't already known. What I doubt will be addressed is one of the biggest underlying issues in that a good chunk, if not all, of the hospitalized kids were drinking quite a bit over the weekend before this happened. I know of at least 3 players who place the blame directly on themselves for doing it and not being properly hydrated when the Monday workouts started.

I've also heard through reliable sources that the parental "outrage" has been extremely exaggerated and isolated to a couple of families, and the players who belong to those families are not necessarily in agreement with their family. Many had a fear of mass exodus from the program and fear of recruits backing out when signing day came, but neither of those things happened.

so this is kind of late and not directed at anyone here in particular, but maybe an overall impression of the issue that I am getting from a lot of the people who are trashing ND. First let me say that I am not defending ND and find their handling of the Declan Sullivan situation to be very poor. However, what I find alarming is that there at times seems to be a tone of gloating from ND haters. It almost comes off that they are benefiting from the death of this young man to be able to take shots at ND. NO doubt that there should be questions asked. No doubt ND should be embarrassed about how they have handled this. But just to throw stones because its a chance to take a jab at ND is also disrespecting this young mans life.

overdramatic much?

Okay, would it be less dramatic to just say it is sad that there are people who do not give a crap about Declan Sullivan except that they can use his death to slam ND:)
