Well, the SEC voted to cap signees at 25 per year, instead of 28. That should reduce some of the oversigning. They also banned 7 on 7 camps held on campus and SEC coaches from attending them....

edit - oh, and the SEC office will now oversee the medical hardshipping of athletes to prevent abuse

double edit - The SEC has also eliminated the exception allowing grad students to transfer into the league with less than two years of eligibility

double edit - one year transfer players such as Russell Wilson will no longer be allowed to sign with an SEC team effective October of this year.

Good move by the SEC and it should become a National rule. If you can't figure out if a kid will qualify for your school by signing day then he probably shouldn't get an offer to begin with.

no, not a national rule. it's necessary in the sec b/c they're all scumbags. but elsewhere, for example, a prior AD might be stupid enough to hire ty willingham. then you could find yourself being over 28 players below the total scholarship limit and need to sign a class of more than 25 that will all be able to enroll.

Again, this would be the coaching staffs fault. If they can't manage that then it's their problem. What about USC signing 30 last year. But yeah the SEC needs this more than anyone.

I realize I am a bit of a homer, but c'mon man. Yes, there are scumbags in the SEC, just like there are scumbags everywhere else. I think it's really convenient to throw stones at the SEC because they are on undeniably on the top of the mountain recently.

USC just got hit hard. Ohio State is about to go down, as well as Boise State and North Carolina. Oregon is getting a serious inquiry into recruiting practices.

I realize it's easy to hate on the SEC but seriously.

A full list of actions at the SEC meetings:

Mike Slive announced that the SEC has divided up $220 million this year with each school grabbing $18.3 million. That’s a record total.

-Slive says the SEC will take five proposals for roster management to the NCAA.

-The SEC will have “oversight” on medical exemptions.

-The SEC did pass a 25-man cap on signing classes, summer school enrollees will count immediately toward that fall’s scholarship numbers. Unanimous vote.

-Slive said that the NCAA “should and will” follow the SEC’s lead.

-The SEC has also nuked the exception allowing grad students to transfer into the league with less than two years of eligibility. The new rule takes effect October 1st. (Dubbed the Jeremiah Masoli rule) How many new restrictions reference Houston Nutt?

-The cowbells will get another year at MSU as the great “Cowbell Compromise” has been extended.

-The SEC did officially nix the use of divisions in basketball. A decision on future scheduling models is expected later this year.

-The presidents voted unanimously to ban 7-on-7 camps on SEC campuses and SEC coaches can no longer attend them.

What's going on with Boise? I haven't heard a word on that.

I think if you would read your post you would get your answer. No one gives a rip about North Carolina and their issues, but OSU, USC and the SEC conference get a lot of attention. Why? Because they are really successful.

The SEC is far and away the worst abuser when it comes to oversigning, that's why they're being singled out.

One of the only useful things SportsCenter had done recently was a comprehensive recap of all the transgressions across NCAA football in the past year. It was pretty illuminating, but for what it's worth, Boise's looked to be the most tame by far (not to mention the lowest profile).

I'm surprised Oregon hasn't been under serious investigation before (that I know of). No other school has a booster quite like Phil Knight.

West Virginia approved beer sales in the stadium this coming year. I'm sure this will end very well. No response yet from the moonshine vendors.

I thought it was hilarious that when the Boise St story came out, ESPN.com's headline was something about a major violation at Boise, implying that it's the football team. But then the story showed that it was minor violations by the football team and the major one was in women's tennis.

I guess I don't understand the grad transfer rule (i mean, why the sec would outlaw it). If a kid graduates and is sitting on the bench for your school, why not let him go play a 5th year somewhere else? he's given you the 4 years he committed to giving you and he earned his degree. you shouldn't control him anymore.

it couldn't possibly be the sustained pattern of abuse in the SEC, USC, and OSU.

I like the new restriction. I'm not sure exactly why the SEC ruled this way, but just maybe it was about the kids already on campus. Also it opens the door to some pretty loose definitions of student athlete.

One example:

Entering last season Ole Miss had a QB in waiting in Nathan Stanley, who went through spring practice and fall drills as the starter. Jeremiah Masoli, who had been dismissed from Oregon for disciplinary reasons, swoops in at the last minute and asks if he can attend Ole Miss to enroll in their Parks and Recreation program. He was cleared to play exactly one day before the season opener and quickly becomes the starting QB. According to the NCAA, “the waiver exists to provide relief to student-athletes who transfer for academic reasons to pursue graduate studies, not to avoid disciplinary measures at the previous university.” Perhaps this was to avoid the whole mess in the future.

Reason #573 why Houston Nutt is a shifty slimeball.

I am not saying anyone is innocent. Its just that no one is going to care if Conference USA and their schools were doing practices similar to the SEC. Just like almost no one cares about North Carolina's issues while OSU and USC were/are top stories.

Why for football? I'd think an open air stadium would be much more in line with the culture the B1G likes to brag about. Not that you can't ever have it at Lucas, but some rotation of all the NFL stadiums in the footprint(all of which are open air except Indy) seems like a solution that would help generate more attachment to the new title game.

I've had this argument too many times on here and elsewhere. Football yes, basketball no.

Having basketball alternate between Chicago and Indianapolis seems a good way to keep attention and interest high. It's a vastly different and good experience at both venues so why not keep it at both? I never quite understood why the Big 10 insisted on having a site for 5 years in a row in the first place. While in football Lucas Oil IMO has so many advantages that it was hard for the Big 10 to pass up not giving it the game every year.
