I'm not happy about this deal, but I'm not totally against it either. If Garza can do what Lilly did in improving his numbers when moving from the AL East to the NL then, it'd be worth it because he'd probably be a #1 starter. I'm not sure that'll happen, but he should still improve I think. Losing Archer hurts a lot though. At least we would only give up one pitching prospect.

Get this guy out of the front office already. Geez.

One thing I usually disagree with this board on is the overreaction surrounding trading certain prospects.

I would've been pretty happy had Archer turned into Matt Garza (who is a quality 27 year old starting pitcher).

The rest is pretty much filler. Maybe Lee had more value, but it's hard for me to get torn up about it when I didn't see him panning out into much more than a defensive sub.

EDIT - I might be missing an obvious one here, but the only time I've really felt we've gotten screwed on a trade was the Pierre trade.

How can you forget the mistakes of trading away future studs like Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson and Jose Ceda?

Garza has had only one good season in his career. How can be command this type of deal?

Only one good season? wtf?

His last 3 years look pretty similarly good to me.

Hendry's worst trade was Mike Wuertz for literally nothing.

4 of your top 15 prospects in a system that was going to be ranked in the top 10 in overall talent for a guy that Tampa will not part with unless you overpay. Move on. Just move on.

If Garza meant the difference between winning or losing this year, I might agree to make that trade. This was a losing team last year, made moves based on not having any money to spend, and really hasn't improved the team significantly enough to justify this trade. St. Louis, Cincinnati and Milwaukee are all in a position to be better than the Cubs next year.

Oh, and Philadelphia is still by far the best team in the NL. While I was all for trading for Garza provided it didn't cost too much in talent, Chicago is clearly overpaying. We know this because ONLY Chicago is showing any interest because the price is too high, and Hendry is bidding against himself.

Yep. I remember the outcry of trading off Bobby Hill for Aramis.

I also remember how stupid it was to trade Choi for Derek Lee, because "Choi is already just as good as Lee is".

That's one way to stretch this and make it look like it was a lot more than it was.

I can't really agree with the rest in terms of the Cubs ability to compete in this division, so if that's where you stand, we'll never agree.

Yea, that was a bad trade. I'm not a very big Hendry fan but he hasn't traded away too many guys that have come back to bite us. His trades are about the only thing I have a little faith in.

Everyone overrates their own team's prospects to an extent. I am usually of the opinion that if you can acquire young, proven talent with prospects, then you do it. Is Garza that guy? Nobody really knows, and won't for a while. Gives us something to talk about.

Apparently you don't remember. There was no outcry. There was a player to be named later in that deal, and it was later released that some of the names on the list that Pittsburgh could pick from were Bobby Hill, Steve Smyth and IIRC, Francis Beltran to name a few. There was hope that they would choose someone other than Hill since they recently traded for Freddy Sanchez, who was a fairly high ranked 2b in his own right.

I don't think you'd find anyone wanting the trade nixed because Hill was included, however.
