I don't see why people are pissed. He'll be good for 25 home runs and post about an .850 OPS. And he's not a terrible defender at first. I prefer Pena, but LaRoche is a decent option, too. He'll also likely be cheaper and it's not like he'd be getting more than one or two years.

He's nowhere near a lock for an 850 OPS, he's a high strikeout low walk guy with no upside. And this team needed an impact bat at 1B, not more of Derrek Lee's bad years.

I liken it to the signing of Jeromy Burnitz. All that's left is for Hendry to sugarcoat it by explaining that he was the guy he wanted all along and the best fit for the team.

He'll probably be better than Lee was last year, so that's something.

LaRoche has only had 1 season with a better than .850 OPS in his career and that was 4 years ago. Last year he had a .788 OPS in 615 PA.

I'd rather see us go for Carlos Pena, but LaRoche isn't terrible as long as it's a one-year deal.

Like PCP said, a mid-.800s OPS isn't out of the question and he's a pretty good bet to be a 2 WAR guy or so. Bill James is predicting a .350 wOBA for 2011. I don't want any more than a 1 year deal, though.

And still go get Chris Davis or a young guy to develop behind LaRoche.

No guarantee. Lee was a 2.0 WAR player last year, LaRoche has peaked at 2.6 in his career.

According to baseball reference, Lee had sub-1 WAR last year.

He was 1.5. They separated out his values for the Braves and Cubs.

Good enough for Hendry.

You mean if he can fit more than 1 of those criteria it's good enough?

Oh, I didn't see that X. Now I get it.
