I know that Alex Gordon has been an ongoing topic of discussion on this board pretty much since the time D Lee was traded, but other than that, have their been any rumors or indications out there that Gordons even remotely on the Cubs radar?

I know there was some talk during the year, but I can't recall if it was just people on here wanting him or if it was an actual rumor with a source.

I would love to have Gordon on the team, I just can't picture him being a valuable starting 1B this year.

The Toronto Sun's Bob Elliot believes the Blue Jays are making a push to acquire Zack Greinke from the Royals.

Elliot believes the Jays could land Greinke if they're willing to part with Kyle Drabek, Travis Snider and a minor leaguer or two. That doesn't sound far off to us. Drabek could slot right into the Royals' rotation, and Snider still projects as a 30-homer-per-year left fielder.

If this were to happen this would almost certainly make Alex Gordon instantly expendable, fwiw

That's a similar package to Archer and Colvin (along w/ another prospect or two). If I'm the Cubs, I'd get into the talks. I wouldn't offer Archer, but I'd pitch them a deal of Carpenter, Dolis, and Colvin, with maybe another lesser talented player thrown into the deal.

Youd offer Carpenter, Dolis, and Colvin for Zach Greinke? Really? Kyle Drabek is one of the top prospects in baseball. I like Archer a ton, but he'll need at least a repeat performance in 2011 before hes on the same level as Drabek as a prospect. Wed probably have to offer more like Archer, McNutt, and Colvin, probably throw in someone like Carpenter or Dolis if we want Greinke.

Drabek's pretty good, but it all depends on what those other 1 or 2 prospects from the Blue Jays are rumored to be. Colvin and Snyder are pretty even, with Colvin being 2 years older, but with more ML success (though Snyder's minors numbers are better). I think Cashner compares pretty well to Drabek. Drabek was BA's 25th rated prospect before last year. And while Cashner was 95, he had a 75 grade compared to Drabek's 70. So, I think you can trade 1 prospect as good as Drabek to match that deal, or you can trade 2 prospects that may be greater than Drabek combined to match it. Carpenter and Dolis may be debateable if they have more combined value than Drabek, but I was just throwing it out there.

If the Cubs have no intention of using Cashner as a starter I'd like to float him around the league to see how other teams value him. If we include him in a trade for a SP like Greinke I probably would not miss him, especially if the Cubs brass decided he was to be a bullpen lifer

Greinke would make this team competitive for the division at least and if the cubs could make the playoffs they would have a solid 3 man rotation so who knows. I would definitely offer 1 of Archer or McNutt, Colvin, and 2 lower level prospects.

I am growing more and more interested in Mark Reynolds, if he does not cost too much to acquire (which it doesnt sound like it). He could be a huge pickup and his ability to take over 3B next year would be valuable.

I'd actually consider giving up a decent amount for Reynolds (nothing major, but more than scraps). He's 27, had a .381 wOBA in 2009 and horrid BABIP issues last year (.257 last year compared to .323 for his career). The biggest question is can he play first and how effectively?

Interestingly, his BB rate and K rate have both steadily increased each year he's been in the majors. I don't know whether to take that as a good sign (he's walking more often) or a bad sign (he's striking out more every year).

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Dodgers have made first baseman James Loney available to trade offers.

The Dodgers are going to want a quality package of prospects in return, but the market is thin on productive bats and Loney should draw a ton of interest. The Brewers and Cubs, in fact, have already inquired on what it might take to land the 26-year-old. He finished the 2010 season with a pedestrian .267/.329/.395 batting line, but he always has lofty RBI numbers and there may be a few organizations that still value that.

Is Loney even any better than a Colvin experiment at 1st? Now if they wanted to trade Either that would be a different story.

I was just looking at his info and thinking I wouldn't want to go past offering Colvin for him. But really don't have much interest.

If you can have him for someone like Colvin, sure, why not?

Because if I wanted Lyle Overbay or Adam LaRoche, I'd just sign them.

My way is cheaper.

You think so? He's in the middle of arbitration years and has racked up some relatively larger RBI totals despite his generally poor hitting. I'd guess he's a lock to get a fairly large raise this season and then without any realistic 1B in the pipeline he will play a lot and be a near lock for another raise next season even without being good.

Someone within the Dodgers has already shot this down, saying it'd be too expensive to go out and replace him on the FA market. Kind of makes sense from their standpoint really. Unless they'd prefer Pena(for more money) over Loney.

Beats the [expletive] out of me; I was completely guessing.
