$5M deferred to Jan 2012

Considering a lot of contracts are coming off the books after this upcoming season, this isn't a huge deal. It's $5 million more to spend this season, and $5 million less to spend next season... but Aramis, Kosuke, Silva, Samardzija, and Grabow will be off the books in 2012 with big money going to only Zambrano, Soriano, and Dempster. Sacrificing $5 million next season shouldn't be much of a burden

I haven't read, but are there any option years or vesting contract years based on incentives?

There's a $16 million club option on Ramirez (which I hope we won't take), a $14 million player option for Dempster (which he probably will take), $12 million mutual option for Silva (which we probably won't take).

That's it. Otherwise, it's $4 million total to buy out Ramirez and Silva

Here's the spreadsheet from Cot's:

He meant on Pena.

I thought we were talking about deferred money, not backloading higher salaries onto the later years of a multi-year deal... not exactly the same thing.

I'm cool with both

So am I... just seems that some posters are getting the two confused.

Oh, thought he meant in general on the Cubs current contracts

Assuming Ramirez and Silva are bought out and Dempster takes his option, the Cubs will have a crap load of money to spend on an otherwise weak FA class

that's what annoys me about people who want to write off next year and "save" all this money to spend big in 2012 or 2013. first of all, you're going to lose money if you suck next year. second of all, if you suck it's going to make you less attractive to FA's. and finally, who the hell do you think they're going to spend all this "saved" money on?

That's $5 million less to spend in a season in which we probably hope to be more competitive *and* have more holes to fill.

They'd still have $40M coming off the books even counting this $5M payout in January.

Not if we defer 5M from next year's contracts to 2013.

So when in January of 2012 does Pena get the $5 million? Does he get $1 million each week? $5 million January 1st? $5 million January 31st?

$1 a day through Jan. 30th.

Jim totally beat Boras on that one.

so 5 million in payroll for nothing in 2012. awesome

i love how hendry finds way to not only screw the team for the upcoming season, but for years after that. he always finds a way.

one year deal? hmm how can i make this hurt us in 2012. i know, let's pay him half of it that year.
