The Chicago Cubs will meet with the agents for free agent first baseman Carlos Pena a second time on Tuesday night, according to major league sources.

ESPNChicago.com Cubs blog

The latest Cubs news from baseball beat reporter Bruce Levine. Blog

The Cubs met with Pena's agent, Scott Boras, on Monday night. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry brought along former Boras client and future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, who is an advisor to Hendry. Maddux sat across the table from Boras, who represented the former pitcher for 20 years.

According to the sources, the two sides talked parameters of a contract, and Pena's camp is looking for a two- or three-year deal for the 33-year-old slugger.

No interest at all in a three year deal. Hendry having a second meeting with both Pena/Webb today things are heating up.

Considering the alternatives, I'm praying for Pena at this point.

carlos pena kind of sucks, but he's obviously the guy here. if we don't get him, i'm starting a thread advocating jack cust.

it's pretty sad.

If the alternative is Laroche, then Pena is the guy. I hoping we land Webb though.

This is going to happen, the Cubs will get him on a 2 year deal because by doing this Hendry will be able to defer some salary to next season. I am going to estimate 2 yrs with incentives up to 22 mil only 6 of it hitting this years pay roll. Just a guess but the fact they are meeting again makes me think they feel they have a competitive offer to make. Lets hope Webb is coming.

Now there is another report on a Cubs-Rangers trade involving Chris Davis. I'm really hoping it's a re-hash of an older report.

Davis and Darren O'Day. I really hope this is true! It would be a pretty awesome trade.

He sucked pretty bad last year, but didn't for three seasons previously. .374 wOBA in each of 2008 and 2009 and a .430 wOBA in 2007. 6.2, 4 and 2.8 WAR each of the past three seasons prior to 2010 is quite good as well. It just depends on whether last year's awful numbers (influenced heavily by a .222 BABIP, 57 points below his career average) is the norm from here on out or not.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that two executives outside the Nationals' organization believe Washington will sign free agent first baseman Carlos Pena.

"We know what the list is. We are still working on a whole bunch of different options to improve the club," general manager Mike Rizzo said. Pena batted just .198 this year for the Rays, but he did slug 28 home runs while tallying 84 RBI. He is known as a solid defensive player and appeals to Washington as a veteran that could lead a young infield, which includes shortstop Ian Desmond and second baseman Danny Espinosa.

The Nationals are this year's drunk guy on eBay. This is absurd.

This guy on the score (I think les grobstein) is saying that he hears from his contacts inside the organization the cubs plan to cut payroll by 15-20% this offseason. Not sure if that's the payroll at the beginning of the year or end of te year.

Anyone else just hear that? He's planning on talking about it more in his show right now.

Oh he said his impression from talking with him is that Colvin will be the starting 1b next year and fukudome the rf unless the cubs get a good deal on a fa 1b they like.

I am so confused, someone is stating Levine is reporting the deal is close, however his blog has no updates and I have not heard anything anywhere. Caught something on ESPN about Karl Ravich saying Pena may be going somewhere soon but have not seen anything further.

Check the first post on this page; Levine writes for ESPN Chicago.

I saw what Levine posted about a second meeting with Pena's people.

Pena for 2/14 is a very fair offer and I'd be happy to see it happen

I'd be fine with that. We're not likely to find a better deal on the FA market next year (unless Pujols comes available or Prince Fielder feels like signing at a big discount with us), so Pena for two years and under $10 mil is decent enough. Hopefully by then Davis will develop enough to be a good first baseman, assuming we make that deal.

I could live with that scenario.

#Cubs deal with Carlos Pena believed to be one year, $10 million. Expect more news later Wednesday

Carrie Muskat.

I'd like to see a second year club option in there just in case he rebounds we can get him at a discounted price. However, that's exactly the reason why I can see he wouldn't want one this season.

dunno if anyone posted this nugget.

The Cubs continued discussions late Tuesday at the Winter Meetings with representatives for the free agent, and the team expected to hear more early Wednesday. A source told MLB.com the two sides had finalized a one-year, $10 million contract but a team official said it was too early to say the deal was done.

Thank god if true. I like the 2/$14 rumor better than the 1/$10 but I'm sure there's some sort of option and at least Hendry can't backload the crap out of a contract for once. I prefer Pena under this contract over the one Dunn signed.

Let's trade for Davis and Day, let cashner start in the minors and sign Brandon Webb to a team friendly deal and call it an offseason.
