I'd rather have Dunn for the next 40 years than one year of pena.

so you'd rather have the guy with a low batting average who draws walks and hits home runs over the guy with a low batting average who draws walks and hits home runs?

I'm pretty excited about this deal. Hope he has a good year left in him. A slugger at Wrigley always has potential to be fun.

carlos pena and adam dunn will have very similar production next season.

Dunn and Pena are very similar players. Dunn has more certainty, but their skill sets are nearly identical, save that Pena plays good D.

I don't think we'll get 2007 Pena, but I don't think it'll be the 2010 version, either.

I'm thinking an .830-.850 OPS, 35 homers, 150+ K's and 100+ walks to go with good defense. I'm not complaining.

And if we're out of the race by the deadline next year we should be able to move Pena for some decent prospects, assuming he bounces back somewhat.

i don't understand how you can call them "very similar" and then predict an .830-.850 OPS when dunn is around .900 every single year.

Low BA, high OBP guys who strike out a lot and hit a lot of homers. I said similar, not identical.

I'm hedging a bit because of last season, but a near .900 OPS from Pena wouldn't be shocking.

While it's more money than I would have liked I appreciate the one year deal. If Pena isn't motivated to put up a career year to earn a long term deal the next offseason he's a fool. Just hope we don't turn around and give him 4/50 or something when he does.

Pena seems excited

"For me as soon as I saw how things were looking and who was interested, the Cubs were my option, the Cubs were my preference," Pena said. "Just as soon as I thought the possibility existed, for me to be part of this ballclub, I immediately wanted to be part of it. I didn't really consider going anywhere else. When the Cubs came out and said they were interested, and I know that there was a need, I just wanted to wear this uniform. and it came about so I'm extremely excited."

Pena said his one year-deal works out well for him and the Cubs.

"You look at the situation for me, coming off a difficult year, it gives me another opportunity, a breath of fresh air, and it's a great situation for me to go over there to the city of Chicago and a team like the Cubs," Pena said. "I'm truly very excited and looking forward to all of this. And I think it also fit the need of the Chicago Cubs organization a little bit with what they are going through right now as far as changing ownership. I think it just made sense for both of us. It was a perfect fit, and I think that's how we got this deal done so quickly."

After playing in front of sparse crowds in Tampa, Pena looks forward to playing in front of mostly packed houses at Wrigley Field.

"The fans are very passionate, the city stands behind its team with incredible passion," Pena said. "That's something that I really appreciate. I can't wait to feel that passion. I can't wait to go in there and every game is going to matter, and I'm going to have the whole entire city of Chicago pulling for us because obviously there is hunger there."

so 5 million in payroll for nothing in 2012. awesome

i love how hendry finds way to not only screw the team for the upcoming season, but for years after that. he always finds a way.

one year deal? hmm how can i make this hurt us in 2012. i know, let's pay him half of it that year.

$5 million in 2012 is cheaper than $5 million now.

Yeah, deferring the money is a good thing. It gives us more flexibility now and we should have more money available next year.

Yeah, it's not a ton of money, and the Cubs are shedding contracts after 2011. I don't see how this is a bad thing, especially if it allows another move or two this offseason.

It also would be very advantageous if the team doesn't contend and Pena is traded mid-season.

It's possible deferring Pena's salary could give us the flexibility to sign Webb, for example. That's pretty key for this team.

True, a team would only pick up $2.5 mil instead of $5 mil at the deadline. Could net us a better prospect, potentially.

Yeah, I don't have much problem with this. It's a single shot, 10 million look to see if a guy who has produced can get some of that back. If not, he's gone quickly.

Sure I'd rather have Dunn but it didn't happen.

Actually wouldn't that be more like picking up 7.5m instead of $5m?
