pena: power, walks, gold glove, clubhouse guy

dunn: power, strikeouts

hmmmm

If ur going to put strikeouts for Dunn you damn suure need to put them for Pena. And if Pena gets credit for walks why doesn't Dunn? And Dunn has always been considered a good clubhouse guy.

Basically what I'm saying is your comment makes no sense.

I actually like this signing. Although I was a bit surprised by his age.

so 5 million in payroll for nothing in 2012. awesome

i love how hendry finds way to not only screw the team for the upcoming season, but for years after that. he always finds a way.

one year deal? hmm how can i make this hurt us in 2012. i know, let's pay him half of it that year.

$5 million in 2012 is cheaper than $5 million now.

It also would be very advantageous if the team doesn't contend and Pena is traded mid-season.

True, a team would only pick up $2.5 mil instead of $5 mil at the deadline. Could net us a better prospect, potentially.

and still be on the hook for $5 mil more

Actually wouldn't that be more like picking up 7.5m instead of $5m?

Well you can really do whatever you want at the deadline as far as sending money one way or another.

For the acquiring team? I don't think they'd be on the hook for the deferred money even if we made a straight-up trade. I think that's one of the differences between backloaded contracts and deferred money - with backloading, the money follows the contract, whereas with deferred money, the signing team is on the hook no matter what (unless there's an agreement the acquiring team will pay it).

Is it really that big an issue that $5million of the contract is deferred until 2012?

This club still musters up a pretty good punch financially. I don't think this $5million is going to force the Cubs into a corner financially, regardless of where or when it is paid.

Right. If this team craps the bed before the trade deadline, they could move 5m in salary dumping players to teams in the race pretty easily.

"For me as soon as I saw how things were looking and who was interested, the Cubs were my option, the Cubs were my preference," Pena said. "Just as soon as I thought the possibility existed, for me to be part of this ballclub, I immediately wanted to be part of it. I didn't really consider going anywhere else. When the Cubs came out and said they were interested, and I know that there was a need, I just wanted to wear this uniform. and it came about so I'm extremely excited."

Pena said his one year-deal works out well for him and the Cubs.

"You look at the situation for me, coming off a difficult year, it gives me another opportunity, a breath of fresh air, and it's a great situation for me to go over there to the city of Chicago and a team like the Cubs," Pena said. "I'm truly very excited and looking forward to all of this. And I think it also fit the need of the Chicago Cubs organization a little bit with what they are going through right now as far as changing ownership. I think it just made sense for both of us. It was a perfect fit, and I think that's how we got this deal done so quickly."

After playing in front of sparse crowds in Tampa, Pena looks forward to playing in front of mostly packed houses at Wrigley Field.

"The fans are very passionate, the city stands behind its team with incredible passion," Pena said. "That's something that I really appreciate. I can't wait to feel that passion. I can't wait to go in there and every game is going to matter, and I'm going to have the whole entire city of Chicago pulling for us because obviously there is hunger there."

Wow that reads like it came straight out of Introductory Press Conferences for Dummies.

Except for that quick blurb on the new ownership, a guy could apply those quotes to any team/city.

Which I'm pretty sure players get a copy of when they sign on with Boras.

Might even be able to net a respectable prospect or two depending on what Pena's production is at the time. I have no issues (for once) with this, and I commend Hendry for this signing.

Mark that on the calendar, because it may be a while before you hear me praise Hendry again.

That was the podcast. 1 hour 5 minute mark exactly. He said 2 million in 2010, 3 million in 2011, 5 mill 2012. Maybe it's not 3 years like I was thinking, and more like 2 million as an immediate signing bonus type of thing? I'm not sure.

A team with a payroll recently in the 140m range has to spread out a 1 year contract over 3 years now. That's just awesome!

That isn't really the case. He gets an immediate signing bonus, which has been a Cubs staple for some reason. The 2011 salary would appear to be $3m and he is reportedly due $5m in January 2012, which means $10m will be paid out over 13 months.

I just wonder though if that last 5 mill shows up on the 2012 payroll though......

It does. Otherwise what is the point of doing that with his contract? It's not like the Cubs could not even afford to give Pena $5 million more dollars this year.

When 2012 comes around and Pena is making $5 million to play for another team, just pretend that Hendry made another horrible multi year signing and had to trade him away and eat his salary.

For those of you keeping track at home, when Carlos Pena suits up for the Cubs, he will do so wearing jersey number...

(drumroll, please)

Mark Prior's number?

I would think all those people who bought nameless no. 22 jerseys all those years ago - and have since seen their jerseys go from Prior to Hart to Gorzelanny to Nady - are okay with this.

Assuming Pena gets the playing time appropriate for a team's presumed starter at first base, he'll be the first starting position player to wear no. 22 since Bill Buckner in 1983. Everyone else to wear it since has been either a pitcher or a reserve position player.

Whenever I see a number 22 for the Cubs I always think of Bill Buckner.

Rondell White wore #22, as did part-timer Billy Hatcher. Something about broken down players with bad wheels in there somewhere.
