The staff could probably use a fresh approach. It's not like they've been trotting out the best pitching year after year.

Yankees have confirmed the news.

See I dont know....as much as I ripped on Rothschild at times, you could certainly make a case that he did a good job in most cases. The Cubs have consistently had good pitching staffs almost every year he was the coach, and there has been a lot of turnover yearly on the staff. How he pulled an above average pitching staff last year out of Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly/Colemen, Wells, Gorzelanny/Silva I'll never know.

I guess we'll know for sure how good he was next year.

I think overall he did a good job, but not an irreplacable one. This team has been consistently on top of the strikeout category, but also the walk totals. They've had some great years, but most of the success came on the arms of some really terrific young arms that also happened to be shredded due at least in part to poor handling by the manager. They also poured the majority of their resources into the pitching side of the equation going back to the day MacPhail arrived. It's not like he's been working with garbage.

Rothschild:

"I’d like to thank Jim Hendry, the Ricketts family, Crane Kenney and the entire Cubs organization for their outstanding support and allowing me to pursue this opportunity with the Yankees," said Rothschild. "My reasons for pursuing and accepting this opportunity are personal and family-based, as the Yankees hold spring training in, and travel several times a year to, my hometown of Tampa. The chance to spend increased time with my family was something I wanted to explore and I am grateful for the opportunity to have done so.

"My nine years with the Cubs were tremendous and I’m proud of the pitching staff I leave behind. I wish Mike Quade, the Cubs and their great fans the best and look forward to returning to Wrigley Field in June."

Hendry:

"The Cubs would like to thank Larry Rothschild for nine years of service to this organization," said Hendry. "We understand his reasons for pursuing the opportunity with the Yankees and agree he is making the right decision by his family.

"My baseball operations staff and Mike Quade have already begun identifying candidates to replace Larry and expect to have a major league pitching coach in place shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend."

Hes gotta feed his family.

Seriously though, easy decision. Gets to see his family more and spend more time at home. Will make more money and likely get another World Series ring. I wish him the best.

Now lets get Maddux back in the dugout.

Has Maddux talked about pitching or is he more interested in the front office game? My impression is he would rather be a GM and/or run a team than be a pitching coach.

That's my impression as well on Maddux.

As far as Rothschild goes, I hate to lose him. I hope this doesn't have anything to do with money. At least nothing to do with us not matching whatever they offered him.

Not an irreplaceable job, but definitely one that will be very tough to replace. Hendry will have to make a very good hire to not see dropoff from Rothschild. This move really hurts, I think.

Isn't there a pitching coach somewhere in the minors (a roving instructor or something) that some on here are high on? I could just be completely making that up, but I think I remember somebody somewhere in our minor leagues.

If I'm crazy on that one, where is Rick Peterson? He might be an option and I know those on here have been high on him in the past.

Mark Riggins is our minor league pitching coordinator. I think people speak very highly about him, maybe that's who you're talking about?

[expletive]

I think Larry was a severely under appreciated asset to this team, and most of the "common" Cubs fans (i.e. cubs.com board) are probably celebrating his decision to leave because they are idiots. Hopefully we can find a competent replacement.

That's exactly who I was thinking about. Good to see I wasn't crazy (at least on that issue).

Wonder how he'd do as the ML pitching coach?
