Why couldn't the Yankees hire Hendry instead?

Why couldn't the Yankees hire Hendry instead?

That shoulda been done. Gotta take both or neither. Since they Yankees are all about respect and Hendry is respected by a lot of baseball people, I bet they would have considered it.

While I am sad to see Larry go, he definitely is not irreplaceable. I am also pretty excited someone within the organization is getting the call. Just because it is a promotion from within the organization doesn't mean they won't be up to snuff.

We are at the brink of a new dawn. The clouds may be dark and unruly at present, but small glimmers of light are piercing the heavens.

We signed Jaramillo to a 3 year $2.4 million contract, but let Rothschild go for 3 years and $2 million. Unless Rothschild really wanted to go to the Yankees, I don't understand how we let this happen.

Rothschild said during an interview that he grew up a Yankee fan. Hopefully, that's what actually made him ask Hendry to let him talk to them. And not that he sees the writing on the wall here and wanted out. Either way though, I question Hendry not making the Yankees give up SOMETHING in return for taking a guy that was under contract.

That's Hendry, though. He "respects" people and wants to try and do good by them. There's certainly positives in that, but there's been a couple moments in recent years where I wonder if that has hurt the Cubs (off the top, namely, the decision to let Kerry test the market because he deserved it, or whatever the stated reasoning was).

At the time Kerry Wood was about to receive a ridiculously high contract. As much as most of us love Kerry, it was a good move by Hendry.

Unless Rothschild really wanted to go to the Yankees

He did, or at least claimed to, under the pretense of spending more time with his family, who lives in Tampa. He lives two blocks away from the Yankees facility down there and the Yankees make several road trips down there per season.

Well this sucks. Riggins is the most qualified in the system to replace him but he's also very valuable to the arms down on the farm.
Posted
Well Riggins sounds deserving. But the insistence for the Cubs to go to the discount bin for everything just sucks.

Amusing that this post came immediately after the one listing the Cubs' failed expensive "big name" hires.

The Cubs provide a pretty compelling case study that spending on coaches is neither prudent nor successful.

Anyone think that with the Yankees hiring Rothschild that a trade of Zambrano to the Yanks becomes a little easier? Greases the skids? More possible now than ever.

my guess is that it is less likely

So amusing.

plus if he has any aspirations to become a manager again, he's a lot more likely to get noticed for his good work with a team contending for world series than with a team floundering around below .500

can leo mazzone be lured out of retirement?

If cost is an issue – and if we're looking in-house only then it is – I really doubt we'd have enough to lure Mazzone out. He'd be a great hire, though.

Yes. As a Cardinals fan, I think Leo Mazzone would be a great for Cubs. I live in Atlanta and listen to him on the sports radio everyday. Some of his analysis of pitchers makes me shake my head and it happens often.

The man worked wonders on guys like Neagle, Hampton, Horacio Ramirez and others in Atlanta. I've heard him a little bit, but nothing that makes me nervous about hiring him.

What happened to him in Baltimore? His perceived coaching ability never panned out with their pitching staff. Was it all because Baltimore was awful?

Personally, I feel a large part of his success was due to having Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz. Anyone could look like a genius when 3/5 of your rotation are HOFers.

I'm not sure exactly what happened there. At least part of it had to do with having crap to work with, but it is concerning if he were to be a candidate.

And I agree it helps to have studs in your rotation, but the Braves also had a lot of guys have success in Atlanta and flame out elsewhere. I give a lot of the credit for that to Mazzone.

Rothschild did this not b/c of money, it's not the Ricketts doing. Hendry is loyal to those who are to him and Rothschild was very loyal to the Cubs and had opportunities elsewhere in the past (Det). He wanted to be in NY and Hendry instead of keeping someone who would rather be in Ny, be in NY. Riggins knows the system better than anyone and deserves a shot.
