Reading idle chatter on Heat boards that maybe the team is coasting so Riley can push out Spoelstra.

Whatever's going on, the effort level was absolutely horrible.

Riley is no dummy. He has no interest in taking over a team that's going to continue to be bad. This is different from the Shaq and Wade team he took over. The expectations are sky high, and he's the one who put the team together. He might take the team over, but he's going to do it if:

1. He actually thinks he could turn it around.

2. The team continues to be so mediocre that it lowers expectations even more.

I don't think either criteria is met yet.

C'mon, he knows with that talent he can get them to win. Also consider the fact that they haven't played 1 minute with Mike Miller this year, who would immediately be the 4th best player on the team when he's healthy, there is a lot of room for growth. As much as I take pleasure in the Heat sucking, I can't deny that there is probably a sleeping giant on that team

And the 1-13 Clippers just beat the 11-1 Hornets.

Despite the Clippers trying their best to blow it.

i honestly don't think i've ever gotten more enjoyment out of a sports team losing than i get with the heat.

really? the cardinals flaming out of the playoffs in amazing fashion last year wasn't more fun?

2009 Vikings?

Regular season wise, I might agree with dexter. It's a nice feeling whenever the Heat lose.

2010 Vikings have been a lot of fun too

It's good to see everyone over analyze the first 14 games out of an 82 game season like they mean anything.

15% of the season: meaningless.

It's gonna mean something, they are going to have to go to Orlando and Boston now to get out of the East.

They're 2 games behind Boston and 1 1/2 behind Orlando (14 games in), and they're playing like garbage according to everyone. Cancel the season, the Heat are finished.

In the NBA, it is meaningless.

Yup thats what everyone is saying. Miami is playing like garbage and due to these 14 games, its now written in stone that Miami will forever play at an 8-6 or worse pace.

What are you reading?

In a sport that is all about hype where all the hype was all about a record setting pace of wins, them losing 6 out of 14 games isn't meaningless.

So the Heat have been banged up and essentially are playing with a whole new roster.

But they are as motivated as any team in the NBA. They have some glaring weakness, particularly inside and in half court offense. So I think its fair to say that they are no longer the runaway pick to win the East, like they were in most preseason predictions. Even based on a measly 14 games.

They'll get better, but I don't see any overreactions. Nobody is saying they are missing the playoffs.

the heat's flaws have nothing to do with mike miller being injured, and haslem sucks and will prob miss the rest of the season anyways. the injury excuse isn't really valid, unless you're saying wade is hurt

their problems are

A) interior defense/rebounding

B) terrible bench and supporting cast outside the big 3 and maybe mike miller (for the 6 weeks he plays before he's hurt again)

C) Wade and LeBron not being able to co-exist effectively (so far)

the wade/lebron thing is a big problem right now. only time will tell if they figure out how to co-exist, but 14 games in and they sure don't look good together at all. it's almost like they're a better team when one of those guys is on the bench and the other can do his thing.

But they are as motivated as any team in the NBA.

are they? when chris bosh says things like "coach wants us to work, we want to chill. we'll have to meet halfway i guess", i find a hard time believing that.

i see a lot more motivation from teams like the lakers and celtics.

in both of the boston/miami games, the celts flat out out hustled and outwilled them. the heat looked scared. boston looked like they knew they were the better team and were going to shove it down miami's throats.

i question miami's character big time.

I really think they'll figure out how to play with each other. James/Wade both are really high IQ basketball players and I just can't imagine them not being able to make it work. What's really kind of sad is how boring the basketball has been. Just not exciting at all.

The interior/depth problems are something that probably can't be fixed on the fly this season.

There's a difference I think between character and motivation. I'm sure people in Toronto and Cleveland would have a lot to say about Bosh and LeBron in this regard. But in terms of a team this hyped wanting to win- there's no doubt about that. The only doubt is whether they are willing to put forth the effort to do it. And if they're not willing to put forth the effort now, then I'm not sure if they ever will be.

Best team in the league!

It certainly does seem like they play their best when only one of them is out on the court. Down the stretch when all three were out there, they struggled to get going and Orlando put them away. They made their runs when either James or Wade were on the court and when the other guy was on the bench.

I'm enjoying guys like House and Z getting shots down the stretch too. That's worked out well.
