Martz said he gave his players entirely too much to handle and consequently the Bears were squashed by the Giants, who set an NFL record with nine sacks in the first half. New York had 10 sacks total, the most ever against the Bears and tying for the most a Martz-directed offensive has ever surrendered.

"Let me just tell you guys this: I just feel terrible," Martz said. "The defense had a great effort in that game. I just tried to do way too much in a short week with these guys. They are not ready for that.

"We've got a bunch of young guys trying to learn how to play and we lost our poise, got on our heels and couldn't do much of anything right. That's an old coach's fault right there. You can pin that one right on me. Whatever went wrong in that game is my responsibility.

"The preparation for that game we felt good about, but it was just way too much for these guys to deal with, so just leave it at that if you would. These guys are going to be fine. I promise you they will be just fine. We'll make sure of that. We're going to make some adjustments. And each week you learn a little bit more about your players and about some of these things. Got a little bit too aggressive in terms of what we were doing and I know better than that. I am a better coach than that."

Ill give Martz credit, he definitely doesn't point the finger at other guys, or shy away from taking the blame. Its pretty refreshing to have a coach in Chicago like that. With that said, man he makes it sound like the Bears are a bunch of dummies.

It is refreshing. But I agree with you -- there's 2 sides to that story. It was week 4 of a season after an entire offseason of work, and he's saying they can't handle a short week and a few extra wrinkles without suffering a complete and total catastrophe? What does that say -?

Want to know why the Bears offensive line sucks almost every year and has really only managed a couple seasons of decent play?
“The key to good offensive line play is based on cohesion and a great offensive line coach, which we have with Mike Tice. The same five players playing together has been the formula for success. The importance of the same five players playing together stems from all the learning and adjustments that go on throughout the week and on game day. If one player makes a mistake, they all suffer—including the quarterback. I’m not minimizing talent, but if the players aren’t on the same page, talent is irrelevant. There have been a lot of very good offensive lines in the NFL historically that weren’t composed of household names.”

It's becasue the GM is delusional. Cohesion is worthless without talent. You aren't going to get a line playing well just through coaching and playing together every week. It's that myth that has kept Olin Kreutz the most important part of this line despite playing the least important position on the line. You can probably make an average line pretty darn good under the right circumstances, but you aren't going to make a crappy line great just by hiring a new coach. And in the age of free agency and salary caps you can't just rely on cohesion to make you good. Guys are going to leave and fresh bodies have to be resupplied constantly. The goal should not be to have the same starting 5 week after week, the goal should be to have the best 5 lineman you can find.

That whole thing is agonizing but the bolded is particularly nauseating.

There's the problem. Should have kept Pace. Omiyale stays at LG. Garza at RG. Williams at RT. That line wasn't good, but it's because the same 5 only was together for 10-12 games!

So what happened in the situation of Tait-Brown-Kreutz-Garza-Miller? They played together for i think 3 years and got progressively worse! Is what Lovie is saying...incorrect?

Of course not. Lovie would never completely talk out of his ass.

I'm seeing the Bears as 2.5 point favorites and the over/under as low as 33.5, by far the lowest of the week. When Simmons and Cousin Sal did their guess the lines podcast there was not an official line (but I had seen Bears -3 off the board), Simmons was saying he'd expect Carolina as 3.5 point favorites if Cutler is playing and 6 point without Cutler. Given how close he gets on most of his guesses, that kind of tells me he typically cheats. Occasionally he'll say a team should be favored by 3.5 when it's 7 and he'll freak about it being too high, but rarely is he that far off to pick the wrong favorite. Edited by jersey cubs fan

Bears official twitter announces Collins will start Sunday. puke.

Dude wtf, Collins is a complete stiff. Anyone would be better than him. Are they trying to recreate the Johnathon Quinn - Quincy Carter 04 matchup with Collins - Claussen?

I'm changing my score prediction to 3-0 Panthers.

Dumb. Although I still think we're better than Carolina with Collins at QB.

Dumb that they didn't go with Hanie or dumb that they are sitting Cutler? When he went out on Sunday night I was convinced he would miss a couple games. I'm still shocked he got back in practice this week.

Predicted high temperature in Chicago on Sunday: 78 degrees.

I love the Bears and I love watching the Bears. But I am not sure I can go through watching another 2 hours of Todd Collins pretending to be a Quarterback,

could be a good week to pick up Chester Taylor. They are going to try and run the ball. Carolina doesn't allow much per attempt, but has given up a lot of total yards. Forte may get run into the ground this game.

Good point. Also I would expect to see some screen passes. Lots of conservative stuff that doesn't involve passing the ball for more than 5 yards, which are impossible for Todd Pierre (Juan Collins?) to complete.

It's good news/bad news if you ask me. Cutler sitting is a good thing. I wanted him to get rested...I'd rather him get healthy.

Would rather Hanie gets the start though.

I'd rather JUICE~! get the start than Hanie. Not because I think Juice has any chance of being a good NFL quarterback, but I don't think there's any chance of Hanie being better than pathetic.

''I've said this many, many times: Big guys aren't big when they're going backwards,'' Tice told Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times. ''They're big when they're going forward.''

Tice, a former head coach, got a reputation as an assistant in Jacksonville for sometimes offering a little too much input into the offense. We've heard whispers that there could already be friction between Tice and Martz, especially with Jay Cutler almost getting maimed last Sunday night.

Sounds like Tice wants to run the ball more. Unfortunately, the big guys on the Bears can't do that either.
